Author

Aston Villa endured a difficult evening against an in-form and well-drilled Arsenal outfit on Wednesday evening.

Substitute Douglas Luiz remarkably scored again from a corner kick to draw Aston Villa level in the second half (74), but within minutes Arsenal regained the lead with the winner from Martinelli; hammering home from Saka’s cross on 77 minutes.

Jesus gave Arsenal a well deserved on 30 minutes after Gabriel Magalhaes, Martin Odegaard and Bukayo Saka all passed up opportunities to open the scoring;

Let’s hear Justin Hawthorne’s post-match thoughts about the players’ individual performances.

EMI MARTINEZ – 6

“From the first whistle, it was backs against the wall and unfortunately for the usually solid Emi, it was his mistake that led to the first goal when he failed to collect a deflected cross and palmed it into the path of Jesus, made a fine save towards the end of the first half. Had less to do in the second half but will rue the first goal”.

Justin Hawthorne

MATTY CASH – 5

“Found it tough to get forward in the first half but did try, wasn’t really in the game a lot but had to defend for large parts of the game. was always going to struggle against an unbeaten Arsenal team. at fault for the second goal”.

Justin Hawthorne

TYRONE MINGS – 7

“I thought he was one of our better players, showed heart, determination and leadership from the back. made tons of blocks and tackles but to no avail”.

Justin Hawthorne

EZRI KONSA – 5

“Has found it tough this season to recapture any kind of form, tried hard to repel the incessant Arsenal attacks but still looks off the pace to me”.

Justin Hawthorne

LUCAS DIGNE – 5

“Another who’s struggling to get any kind of form together, tried to get forward in between his defensive duties but the quality is lacking in his game at the moment”.

Justin Hawthorne

BOUBARCAR KAMARA – 7

“You have to feel sorry for Kamara at the moment, he’s entered the Villa team as our only new signing and whilst you can see his quality, he’s almost a one-man midfield at the moment”.

Justin Hawthorne

JACOB RAMSEY – 4

“It pains me to say it but he looks the shadow of the player who had such a great season last year, effort is there but form most certainly is not”.

Justin Hawthorne

JOHN MCGINN – 4

“You can see he wants it badly but in my opinion the captancy has added unnessasary weight onto his shoulders, was substituted; needs leaving out”.

Justin Hawthorne

EMI BUENDIA – 4

Seen as the saviour by many anti-Coutihnio fans but he too is struggling to impact a game just like Phillipe; a quiet night”.

Justin Hawthorne

OLLIE WATKINS – 6

“Always a tough night playing on your own up top away to top of the league, I thought he did well and tried hard to link play but didn’t have anything to feed off”.

Justin Hawthorne

* LEON BAILEY – 8

“In my opinion, our best attacker against arsenal ran with the ball well and went searching for it to try and make things happen”.

Justin Hawthorne
