So we’ve completed the month of December unbeaten and sign off what has been a roller-coaster of a calendar year with a resolute, battling, and gutsy display away at Chelsea to earn a 1-1 draw.

The team at UTV podcast – Luke Robinson, Ryan Mckeown, Justin Hawthorne and Sebastian Bacon cover today’s Player Ratings.

Aston Villa Formation 4-2-3-1

Emi Martinez – 7.5

No chance with Giroud’s goal. Is there a keeper in the world who has better handling than Emi? – No! (RM)

Matty Cash – 7

Usual solid performance from our ever dependable full back. (JH)

Ezri Konsa – 7.5

Back in the starting line-up like his never been away. Threw his body at everything Chelsea offered. He did find it tough going against Giroud. (RM)

Kortney Hause – 8

Big chance missed from a first half corner, needs to be hitting the target. Threw his body on the line, another good defensive display. (LR)

Matt Targett – 7

Struggled to cope with the trickness of Callum Hudson-Odoi, also left alot to be desired with his limited attacking outlet. (SB)

John McGinn – 9

If fatigue was an excuse after two games in 48 hours then Super John McGinn didn’t get the memo. (JH)

Douglas Luiz – 8

Displayed a performance that perhaps went under the radar, did everything you could have asked of him and did it well. (SB)

Anwar El Ghazi – 7.5

Tough night for the wide man with more defending needed but stuck at it and got the all important equaliser. (JH)

Jack Grealish – 7

Jack found himself often being man marked, sometimes doubled up on at times and failed to hit the standards he’d expect of himself, often finding himself frustrated, he will be the first to tell you he could have offered more, but was impactful with his defensive work. (SB)

Bertrand Traore – 6

At fault for the first goal. didn’t track back allowing Chilwell a first time cross. Had a diffuclt game vs Chilwell, all in all solid enough. (LR)

Ollie Watkins – 6

Hold up play was decent and again a willing runner first half. Lead the line well without too much attacking intent. (LR)

Substitutions:

Jacob Ramsey – 6 (on for El Ghazi, 82 minute)

Almost made a dramatic entrance with his first touch, fizzing one just past Mendy’s post.

Keinan Davis – 5 (on for Traore, 86 minute)

Subs not used:

Heaton, Guilbert, Elmohamady, Taylor, Engels, Nakamba, Hourihane
