EURO 2020 | PLAYER RATINGS | England 0-0 Scotland

In what can only be described as a drab 0-0 draw our Euro hopes look as far away as ever.

The manager decided to keep faith with the front 4 despite them flattering to deceive in the first game. He replaced the full-backs with James and Shaw coming in.

This performance has given us far more questions than answers, we should still qualify from this group but I fear for us when we play someone decent.

Let’s see how the fans rated the players, joining us today – Justin Hawthorne, Mike Rean (@yorkshirevilla1), David Jordon and Helen Wood (@_DOUBLE_H)

STARTING LINE-UP

Formation 4-2-3-1

Jordan Pickford – 7

Spent most of the first half a spectator, only really called into action once when he produced a good save to deny O’Donnell in the 29th minute, diving low to his right and showing great reactions given the shot was unsighted until late. Could perhaps have directed the ball better to parry it out of play rather than back into the danger area.

In the 2nd half Pickford floated in a fantastic pass, which almost put Sterling in just before the hour mark, showing his intent to get the team on the offensive, something the England team lacked on the whole.

Generally, a solid performance, commanding his area well, though was never seriously tested. (Helen)

Reece James – 6

Looked comfortable in defence but rarely tested. Gives an option going forwards and wasted an opportunity on the edge of the area.

Considering defence was supposedly our weakness, we have looked reassured at the back. However, with such a negative manager, that is hardly surprising.

Scotland deserve credit but England were so so far off the pace. (David)

John Stones – 6.5

Could have and probably should have scored the opener.

Didn’t have a lot to do but wasn’t overly worked by Scotland.

Needs to show his ability more bringing the ball out now (Justin)

Tyrone Mings – 6.5

As ever, Mings was commanding in the air and seemed to enjoy the physicality of his battle with Dykes.

He displays a calmness on the ball which defies his lack of international experience, though a slip in the 55th minute let Scotland in for a hairy moment. He made several key headers in the second half as Scotland searched for an opener, but he perhaps lacked the killer pass forward that he showed he is capable of against Croatia.

Overall gave an assured performance, taking control of the back line and constantly barking orders, even doling out a rocket to Mount for not tracking his man deep into the first half. (Helen)

Luke Shaw – 6

Linked up well with Sterling at times but struggled to get forward down the left flank. Very little to report (Mike)

Delcan Rice – 5

Was ok but didn’t dominate and got overrun at times with Mcginn, McGregor and Gilmore having the better of the midfield exchanges.

Could be looking over his shoulder in the next few games, but quite frankly so could most of the starting eleven. (Justin)

Kalvin Phillips – 4

After hitting the heights of the Croatia game much was expected of him against Scotland but he went missing for most of the game.

All his positivity and driving runs were none existent, with Henderson now fit I fear Phillips has already peaked at the Euros and we might not see him again. (Justin)

Mason Mount – 6

Busy at times during the first half but drifted out of the game in the 2nd half. Made the odd good pass in behind but was wasteful when his chance came midway through the first half. (Mike)

Phil Foden – 5.5

Made the odd run in behind and tried to get on the ball but lacked quality. Subbed for God halfway through the 2nd half. (Mike)

Raheem Sterling – 1

The love affair between the manager and Sterling is embarrassing. His form for the club has been awful and that form has continued into the 2nd biggest competition in football.

Whilst a keen runner behind, a team sitting back doesn’t afford Sterling the space or the number of chances required.

The ball continually bounces off him and when he does have the ball, he drives down blind alleys.

Could have had a very dubious penalty but that would have been an injustice and papered over the cracks just like the Croatia game. (David)

Harry Kane – 2

So far off the pace, it is untrue. No creativity doesn’t help, but England as an attacking force are non-existent. It takes a special manager, with the talent at his disposal, to nullify arguable the most lethal striker in Europe. (David)

Substitutions:

Grealish on for Foden 63 – at last Southgate finally threw him on but found it hard to get hold of the ball with Scotland dominating the final 20

Rashford on for Kane 74 – barely touched the ball, Calvert-Lewin must be wondering why he wasn’t used in another weird substitution.
