AS IT STANDS: GROUP E

As it stands: UECL Group E

Aston Villa will try to secure top spot in Group E with a win over top-of-the-table Legia Warszawa on Thursday evening. If Aston Villa win by two clear goals, they will automatically qualify for the knock-out round of 16 (avoiding the playoff round versus Europa League drop-outs) with a game to spare.

Article 16 Equality of points – group stage: If two or more teams are equal on points on completion of the group matches, the following criteria are applied in the order given to determine their rankings:

  1. higher number of points obtained in the group matches played among the teams in question;
  2. superior goal difference from the group matches played among the teams in question;
  3. higher number of goals scored in the group matches played among the teams in question;
  4. if, after having applied criteria a) to c), teams still have an equal ranking, criteria a) to c) are reapplied exclusively to the matches between the remaining teams to determine their final rankings. If this procedure does not lead to a decision, criteria e) to k) apply in the order given to the two or more teams still equal;
  5. superior goal difference in all group matches;
  6. higher number of goals scored in all group matches;
  7. higher number of away goals scored in all group matches;
  8. higher number of wins in all group matches;
  9. higher number of away wins in all group matches;
  10. lower disciplinary points total based only on yellow and red cards received by players and team officials in all group matches (red card = 3 points, yellow card = 1 point, expulsion for two yellow cards in one match = 3 points);
  11. higher club coefficient (see Annex D)

Despite currently topping Group E, domestically, Legia are stuttering. They halted their alarming league form with an away win against ninth-placed Radomiak prior to the victory over HŠK Zrinjski Mostar in the last UECL game-week, ending a run of four consecutive league defeats to Jagiellonia, Raków, league leaders Śląsk, and Stal Mielec.

Legia drew back-to-back home games between the triumph over Mostar and the upcoming match at Villa Park, drawing 0-0 with third-placed Lech Pozna and most recently 2-2 with thirteenth-placed Warta Pozna.

Legia occupy sixth place in the Ekstraklasa.

HŠK Zrinjski Mostar will play away against AZ Alkmaar on Thursday in UEFA Europa Conference League. The reserve fixture saw Mostar come from three goals down to defeat AZ 4-3.

Both sides understand that anything less than a win will result in their elimination from the competition, and even that may not be enough if the points are shared in Birmingham.

Since losing to Legia in the previous game week, domestically, HK Zrinjski Mostar has kept pace with league leaders Borac, gaining six points out of a possible nine.

They have recorded back-to-back wins against NK Široki Brijeg and GOŠK Gabela, winning 3-1 and 5-1, respectively. Mostar currently occupy second-place in the Premijer Liga, four points behind leaders Borac.

As for AZ Alkmaar. They’ve won one and lost one since the defeat to Aston Villa.

Following the setback to the Premier League club, they suffered their first domestic defeat of the season, a 1-0 loss to Feyenoord.

They did return to winnings ways at the weekend; goals from Ruben van Bommel, Vangelis Pavlidis, and Bruno Martins Indi securing a 3-0 home win against Volendam.

AZ Alkmaar sit 3rd in the Eredivisie; ten points behind leaders PSV.
