England won the Under-19 European Championships on Friday, with Carney Chukwuemeka, Aaron Ramsey, and Tim Iroegbunam all playing a major role.
Carney Chukwuemeka, who had started all of the Young Lions’ previous games in the competition, began again, with Ramsey, and surprisingly Iroegbunam, named as substitutes.
Ian Foster’s nervy Young Lions struggled in the first half, and Israel capitalised just before halftime with a slick counter and a superb individual finish from Oscar Gloukh.
England came out after the break with a purpose, and it wasn’t long before they were level; Callum Doyle poking home from a corner after 52 minutes.
On 57 minutes, Ian Foster introduced Ramsey, who immediately inspired Chuckwuemka to lift his game. When Iroegbunam entered the battle after 73 minutes, he laid the groundwork for a period of England dominance, led by Ramsey and Chukwuemeka.
Chukwuemeka nearly won it in normal time, but his long-range effort rebounded off the post with Tzarfati beaten.
As the game entered extra time, England dominated, and their efforts were rewarded when Harvey Vale’s stunning left-footed cross from the right found Chukwuemeka to put England ahead, before Villa team-mate Ramsey put the game out of reach with a tap-in following good work by Liam Delap.
After a hard-fought victory over a strong Israel team, England’s players celebrated with the lifting of the European Championship trophy.
Well done to the Villa boys!
