Weekend and Midweek Round-Up

Cameron Archer was at it again as he bagged another goal to add to his impressive tally so far since joining Preston on loan in the Championship.

Louie Barry scored his first senior league goal for Swindon Town and backed it up with a brace against Walsall in mid-week, Matt Targett impressed in an exceptional performance for Newcastle, Philogene-Bidace broke a record, Jed Steer keeps a clean sheet and Trezeguet scored a brace.

Cameron Archer (Preston)

Reading (H)

20 year-old Cameron Archer was not only on the cover of the matchday programme, he was also on the scoresheet again!

It looked like it was all over for Preston after 55 minutes, when they found themselves trailing by 3 goals to nil against struggling Reading. The home side however, fought hard to get back in the game and in the 74th minute Archer would make it 3-2, scrambling in after Reading had failed to clear a corner.

It’s Archer’s third goal in four games.

Archer would play the full 90 but his goal wasn’t enough to help his team, as they pushed for the equaliser.

Reading clung on to secure all 3 points. Preston 2-3 Reading

Nottingham Forest (H)

Archer played the full 90 minutes as Preston played out a 0-0 draw with Play-Off hopefuls Nottingham Forest.

Matt Targett (Newcastle United)

Matt Targett was ineligible to face his parent club, Aston Villa in Newcastle United’s 1-0 victory last Sunday.

However, on Saturday, Targett was straight back into the starting XI, occupying the left-back position as usual away against West Ham.

Targett would enjoy the full 90 minutes, putting in a decent performance and the Newcastle fans are loving him.

The game finished; West Ham 1-1 Newcastle

Louie Barry (Swindon Town)

Carlisle (A) Sat 19th Feb

Louie Barry was on top form again away at Carlisle.

The youngster grasped the task in hand, and score his first goal for Swindon since joining on loan in January – which is also his first professional league goal.

Barry played the 90 minutes as his side cruised to victory.

Carlisle 0-3 Swindon

Walsall (A) Tuesday 22nd Feb

Louie Barry scored a brace, making it 3 goals in 2 games or you could say 3 goals in just 3 days and his first goal on home soil. Swindon battered Walsall at the County Ground 5-0.

Kaine Kesler-Hayden (MK Dons)

Sunderland (A)

Kesler-Hayden who was an unused substitute in the last outing, was on the subs bench again for their away day at Sunderland. Kesler-Hayden would get a few minutes near the end as he was brought on in the 87th minute, to help his side retain the lead. It finished;

Sunderland 1-2 MK Dons

Charlton (A) Tuesday 22nd Feb

Kaine Kesler-Hayden started this one and doubled MK’s advantage just before the hour, reacting quickest after MacGillivray had made an excellent low save to his left to parry Wickham’s low strike. It was Kesler-Hayden’s first goal for MK Don’s. Hayden would make the League One TOTW.

Charlton 0-2 MK Dons

Philogene-Bidace (Stoke City)

Birmingham City (H) Fri 19th Feb

The undroppable winger was involved for the whole duration of this entertaining encounter with Birmingham City.

Another promising performance from Jaden Philogene-Bidace at the weekend as his side went back and forth with the noses. The winger recorded a Championship record of attempting (20) and completing (10) the most dribbles vs Blues.

The game finished – Stoke City 2-2 Birmingham City

Luton (H) Wed 23rd Feb

Bidace played 54 minutes as Stoke City lost 1-2 at home to Luton Town.

Jed Steer (Luton Town)

West Brom (H) Sat 19th Feb

Luton manager Nathan Jones handed Jed Steer his home debut, replacing Shea in goal against Steer’s favourite opposition, West Brom.

Jed “Stare” put in a great performance, keeping a clean sheet and made the Whoscored.com Championship Team of the Week.

Stoke (A) Wed 23rd Feb

Jed Steer started consecutive league match’s as Luton backed up their win at the weekend with another against Stoke City.

Trezeguet (Istanbul Başakşehir)

Trezeguet was on form as he scored a brace to give his side a 2-0 victory over Rizespor. Trez scored in both halves and was denied his hat-trick when he was subbed off in 89 minute.

Aaron Ramsey (Cheltenham Town)

Wycombe (A)

Aaron Ramsey’s name was on the starting XI teamsheet again as he put in a decent performance in this 10 goal thriller against Wycombe Wanderers away from home.

Tyreik Wright (Colchester)

Northampton (A)

Tyreik Wright watched on from the substitute bench as his side were trailing by 2 goals to nil. Wright would be asked to try and salvage something from the game when he was brought on in the 82nd minute. However, it was too much of a uphill mountain to climb and Northampton added a third in stoppage time. It finished;

Northampton 3-0 Colchester

Hartlepool (H)

Tyreik Wright came off the bench on 87 minutes, but was unable to help Colchester salvage a late draw. The game ended 1-2.

Filip Marschall (Gateshead FC)

Filip has claimed his place in goal for Gateshead and would naturally start this one too. He would concede from the spot after just 15 minutes against Taylor of Spennymoor Town. He would be fundamental in stopping his side going further behind. His side would get back into the game and Marschall would provide an import save from between the sticks just 3 minutes before his side would get the eventual winner. The stopper would continue his heroics to keep Spennymoor at bay. It ended;

Gateshead FC 2-1 Spennymoor Town

Farsley Celtic (H) Tuesday 22nd Feb

Marschall starts and makes some key saves for Gateshead at home in this 3-1 victory over Farsley. Gateshead are now 6 points cleat at the top of the league.

Finn Azaz (Newport County)

Finn has established himself as a regular starter in the Newport County team. He proved to be a real handful yet again for the home side as he tried to put his side ahead with a couple of notable efforts. Azaz would play the whole 90 and help his side push on to get a well earned point against 10-man Mansfield.

Newport County 1-1 Mansfield Town

Frédéric Guilbert (Strasbourg)

“It was another decent performance from Guilbert who provided the assist for Perrin’s superb finish. A bit of a collective defensive effort that one with Guilbert delivering well from the free-kick. I guess you could question Guilbert on Saint-Etienne’s first as it does go through him and the guy next to him, but it was a pretty crowded box and Boudebouz did well to smash it home. Saint-Etienne’s second I certainly would not single him out for.” – Jonathan Johnson (Journalist, French League 1 Specialist)

Saint-Étienne 2-2 Strasbourg

Seb Revan (Hereford)

Chester (A)

Seb would once again be a MOTM contender for Hereford as they overcame Chester in a thrilling battle. Revan would start and indeed be involved for the whole contest.

Chester 2-3 Hereford

Southampton 2-0 Everton

Conor Hourihane (Sheffield United)

Swansea (H)

Hourihane was back on the bench for this one having competed for the whole of the 0-0 goalless draw against Hull last Tuesday night. He would watch his side thump Swansea by 4 goals to nil on Saturday;

Sheffield United 4-0 Swansea

Blackburn (H) Wed 23rd Feb

Hourihane was on the bench for 2nd game in a row and remained a unused substitute in Sheffield United’s 1-0 win over Blackburn.

Keinan Davis (Nottingham Forest)

Bournemouth (A) Fri 18th Feb (Postponed)

Nottingham Forest’s away fixture against Bournemouth was postponed due to the weather.

Preston (A) Tue 22nd Feb
