Aston Villa Formation 4-2-1-3

Emi Martinez – 9*

Well, at half time I was preparing a 0 rating as he hadn’t touched the ball, apart from the odd goal kick. Come the second half and we’re once again indebted to the Argentine! First up was a decent stop from Neto, the Portuguese winger burst away from Matt Targett and fired a drive at Emi’ near post. However, Coady did beat Martinez but not the post, with the rebound falling to Saiss who ballooned over the bar! Then that save! Connor Coady must have thought he’d bagged the winner only for Martinez’ left peg to deny him – world-class save, from a world-class goalkeeper! Man of the Match. (RM)

Ahmed Elmohamady – 7

Banished the memories of the poor mid-week performance to pocket Adama Traore! (RM)

Ezri Konsa – 8

A clean sheet and defensively sound performance from the star youngster earns him a high rating. As well as this, Konsa had two of the best offensive chances for Villa, hitting the woodwork after a quarter of an hour and shooting just wide in the dying moments of the game. Did give away a dangerous free-kick late on, but made up for this with vital blocks and tackles when called upon. (HG)

Tyrone Mings – 7

Trademark composure on show without the lapses in concentration. Ultimately another solid display in a defence that lives for clean sheets. (LM)

Matt Targett – 8

Another solid display from arguably our most consistent player this season, defends very well especially against Neto who was Wolves main threat. An England call-up surely isn’t far away now, and well deserved it will be. (JH)

John McGinn – 7

If I’m brutally honest I’m just not sure what to think of him at the minute, seems to be the only constant in the midfield three but is struggling to have an impact in games, will never go missing and his energy is infectious just needs to add that final ball, needs a goal. (JH)

Morgan Sanson – 6

Did the basics right for the most part and was keen to get forward down the left side to help out the team. Got booked in the first half and not 100% match sharp, but a solid first start for the new signing and showed signs of a very good player in the making. Subbed off early. (HG)

Douglas Luiz – 6

Doing his usual dirty work which so often goes unnoticed. Played his part in a midfield which looked balanced in the first half before tailing off in the second. (LM)

Trezeguet – 6.5

Finally got his chance to start and while he was full of energy in the first half like many others it faded after the break, couldn’t quite turn the effort into meaningful assists or goals. (JH)

Bertrand Traore – 5

Struggled to make any kind of impact. Particularly in the second half when the villa faded as an attacking force. (LM)

Ollie Watkins – 7

A goalless draw suggests little activity from the striker, but Watkins was a constant nuisance for the Wolves back three. Making crucial runs and holding up the ball where possible, Ollie was essentially the one bright spark for Villa going forward, hitting the bar with a scorching strike just three minutes in. He didn’t receive the necessary service and was isolated for much of the match, but a solid performance for the number 11. (HG)

Substitutions:

Barkley on for Sanson (61st Minute) 5

Failed to make an impact from the bench for the second consective match.

Davis on for Traore (78th Minute) 5

Ramsey on for Traore (83rd Minute) 5

Subs not used:

Heaton, Kesler, Taylor, Engels, Nakamba, Philognene-Bidace.
