PLAYER RATINGS | ASTON VILLA 0-1 WEST HAM UNITED

Author

West Ham United were Aston Villa’s visitors in the Premier League on Sunday afternoon.

The Villans dominated the first half but lacked any creativity or cutting edge in the final third.

After the break, West Ham took the initiative and took the lead thanks to Pablo Fornals, who’s effort deflected off Ezri Konsa into the Villa goal.

Let’s hear the fans post-match thoughts about the players’ individual performances.

EMI MARTINEZ – 6

Didn’t have to do too much and was unlucky to be caught out by a fortunate West Ham goal. Consistently one of our only bright sparks as of late. The emotions on his face show that he’s hurting and wants to progress with the club.

Ellis Burnett

MATTY CASH – 6

First half did well, seamed to have been told to sit back a bit more, 1 outstanding defensive intervention to dispossess Bowen, not enough going forward though

Justin Hawthorne

CALLUM CHAMBERS – 6.5

Calum Chambers despite defeat. Will hope to get a run of games in the team after being swapped in and out in the early weeks.

Joey Millington

EZRI KONSA – 6

Actually a very good showing from Ezri and one much better that recent performances. Largely untroubled throughout. More performances like this and we may see the best of Konsa again.

– Gary Plaza

LUCAS DIGNE – 6

Similar game to cash although his offensive output was better, and the tackle on Bowen was also outstanding.

– Justin Hawthorne

BOUBARCAR KAMARA – 7

Just brilliant. Grows game by game and just gets better. Controlled the tempo today and looked at ease throughout. My only worry is that he currently seems a level above any other player at the club. Can we really keep hold of his talent?

– Gary Plaza

DOUGLAS LUIZ – 7

Finally given a chance to start in the 8 role, and was very good first half, kept the ball well and used it well, lacked the killer final pass though like most of our attacking threat. Withdrawal was the turning point and we lost the midfield battle after.

– Justin Hawthorne

JOHN MCGINN – 5

The skipper looked good in the first half, especially when deployed on his natural left side. Drifted in the second half and looked uncomfortable without Luiz alongside him. Will hope to rediscover form soon.

– Joey Millington

PHILLIPE COUTINHO – 6

A bright start from the little Brazilian. Got on the ball in good areas and ran at the heart of the West Ham side. Ineffective in the second half and went off after suffering yet another knock.

– Joey Millington

OLLIE WATKINS – 4

Plenty of running but just poor overall. So much lacking in the final third it’s actually worrying.

– Gary Plaza

DANNY INGS – 6

Ran hard in the first half and was always showing for the ball, but the lack of attacking threat led him to be feeding off scraps most of the game in the final third until he was replaced by Bailey.

– Justin Hawthorne

SUBS

RAMSEY – 6

On for Luiz 66th minute

Was sent on to give the team impetus and attacking threat from the middle but never really looked like doing that, if anything his introduction gave West Ham the edge?

Justin Hawthorne

BUENDIA – 6

On for Coutinho 66th minute

After another good performance off the bench in the week, Buendia will feel unlucky to have missed out on a starting spot. Misplaced a few passes but looked a threat when on the ball. The silky Argentinian is likely to be back in the starting line-up soon.

Joey Millington

BAILEY – 5

On for Ings 78th minute

Huffed and puffed and showed some nice glimpses but also game the ball away at times, ultimately had little impact and was wasteful with his shooting .

Justin Hawthorne

ARCHER – N/A

On for McGinn 90+1st minute

When your side needs a goal, bringing Archer on is a logical move. But the striker was given just two minutes to make an impact after Watkins and Ings had toiled on Sunday afternoon.
