Aston Villa put their recent poor home form behind them to claim the three points against Crystal Palace this Saturday.
Let’s hear the fans’ post-match thoughts about the players’ individual performances.
EMILIANO MARTINEZ – 7
“It feels generous to rate Martinez highly when he had so little to do. On the other hand – he didn’t really put a foot wrong. Conceded the offside Zaha shot but otherwise had a very quiet day at the office. Even managed to avoid another booking for time wasting this week!”

MATTY CASH – 8
“A big day for Matty Cash who was up against a returning Wilfried
Zaha; the man that run him ragged in the return fixture at Selhurst Park earlier this season. The Ivorian was easily Palace’s most effective player this afternoon but Villa’s No.2 shunned the talisman time and time again with help from his captain, John McGinn, down that right hand side. Cash was instrumental in the winning goal too, putting the ball into the box for Joachim Andersen to put into his own net. After losing his place in the side at the beginning of Emery’s reign, the Polish defender has worked his way back into the side and has shown signs of his old self in recent weeks. Well in Cashy”!

TYRONE MINGS – 8
“Solid display apart from a lucky clearance early on which went for a corner rather than a own goal. Dealt with Zaha and co with ease and without the usual pettiness”.
– Rating contribution from Gary Plaza
EZRI KONSA – 6.5
“Probably the best thing that happened was Zaha running off him to score, especially once VAR stepped in and chalked it off. This seemed to be the wake up call Villa’s Number 4 needed. Continued to lack conviction at times but marshalled the constantly shifting Palace front line well in all. Has to end in credit for achieving the goal of a second consecutive clean sheet”.
– Rating contribution from Ivan McDouall
ALEX MORENO – 7
“Another player that didn’t really put a foot wrong. Thought he looked really bright going forward and was enjoying a lot of attacking play in the first half, getting into some dangerous areas”.

DOUGLAS LUIZ – 6.5
“Ever mercurial and ever frustrating. Moments of pure wonder on the ball are offset by some hugely suspect passing at times. He embodies that cliche of doing the hard bit before messing up the easy aspect. Burgeoning partnership with Kamara looks like to be put on hiatus which is a shame as they are, as a pair, so critical to what Villa do. As with rest of the side ends in credit for achieving a good 3 points to back up the Everton away performance”.
– Rating contribution from Ivan McDouall
BOUBACAR KAMARA – 8
“Another faultless performance. Defensively perfect with the added bonus of great vision. Went off with a nasty looking injury which we pray isn’t too serious”.
– Rating contribution from Gary Plaza
*JOHN MCGINN – 9
“Another top, top performance from the captain who has really shone since returning back from injury. It looked like the John McGinn of old, particularly in that first half; chasing each ball, using his body well and effective in possession. The Scot played the game’s decisive pass in the first-half when expertly sending Cash through down the Villa right, splitting the Palace defence, before it was eventually turned into his own net by Joachim Andersen. The No.7 said in the mid-week interview that he was ‘in a good place at the minute’ and hoped it would continue and it certainly did this afternoon! Super John McGinn”!
– Rating contribution from Liam Davies
EMILIANO BUENDIA – 7.5
“After earning his place back in the side following the game-changing cameo at Goodison Park last week, Emi Buendia proved his worth once again and should have walked away with his first assist of the season but for Ollie Watkins’ devastating miss just before the break. The little Argentine battled hard (as ever) and was at the heart of Villa’s creativity throughout. Another good showing from the record signing”.

JACOB RAMSEY – 5
“A quiet cameo again for Ramsey. Thought his retention of the ball and passing was really poor at times, but his work rate as always was decent and he did pop up with some good recoveries. We need more from the youngster”.
– Rating contribution from Hannah Gowen
OLLIE WATKINS – 6.5
“Oh Ollie. When put clean through by in the first half Villa Park was poised to erupt in awe for the 6 in 6 striker. And then he missed. Will be absolutely kicking himself for that as didn’t have another chance. One interception and barrelling run deep into Palace territory was another highlight: Second half was very isolated as Villa looked to keep the ball before being replaced by Duran”.
– Rating contribution from Ivan McDouall
THE GAFFER – 10
“Emery said midweek that the key to winning at home is not conceding. We got that correct today and saw the game out. 12 games with 7 wins is brilliant”!
– Rating contribution from Gary Plaza
SUBS
CALUM CHAMBERS – 6.5
ON FOR KAMARA, 60 MINUTES: Came on to replace the injured Kamara. A couple of misplaced passes early on but I’ll forgive that and blame his lack of minutes. Helped see the game out. – Gary Plaza
LUCAS DIGNE – 5
ON FOR ALEX MORENO, 69 MINUTES: The second sub to come on with 20 to go. Got the job done! – Hannah Gowen
LEON BAILEY – 5
ON FOR RAMSEY, 69 MINUTES: Came on with 20 to go when the game was dying out and Villa were struggling to do anything of note. Very typical Bailey showed flashes of excellence followed by immediate frustration. – Hannah Gowen
JHON DURAN – 5
ON FOR WATKINS, 85 MINUTES: Ten minutes run out and as expected charged about with great enthusiasm but little real effect. Blazed one into the Holte. – Ivan McDouall
Subs not used: Robin Olsen (GK), Viljami Sinisalo (GK), Bertrand Traore, Ashley Young.
