STARTING LINE-UP

Formation 4-2-3-1

Emi Martinez – 6

Didn’t have a lot to do, but did well with the work he had to do. Wasn’t at fault for any of the goals as there was nothing he could do. Solid as always. (Adam)

Matty Cash – 6

Had the most difficult job of the day trying to suppress United’s attacks from the left with limited support. Relied on him to stay level in the opening 15 minutes. Looked promising going forward but nothing came of it. (Georgia)

Ezri Konsa – 7

Gareth Southgate was in the stands again so if this performance doesn’t get him in the England team then he needs to select Portugal.

Solid is an understatement for today’s outing. Many great blocks and positioning that cannot be coached. Quite easily one of the best centre backs to ever wear the colours.

He’s always in the right position and I lost count of his clearances today, unfortunately, Mings was not on the same level. (Gary)

Tyrone Mings – 5.5

Mings, as always, was vocal with his leadership from the back, and like most in this Villa side today, he had a very solid first half.

Unfortunately, the England man got too tight to Greenwood – allowing the youngster to spin him and bury the ball past Martinez for his second goal in as many outings at Villa Park!

Is Greenwood going to become one of those players that love a goal at Villa Park – let’s hope not! (Ryan)

Matt Targett – 7

Did well overall defensively, especially in the first half and he didn’t put a foot wrong in the game overall. Put some nice crosses into the box to create a few chances this afternoon. Another solid display, not too much to criticise about Targett’s performance this afternoon. (Adam)

Douglas Luiz – 5

Ok in the first half, but very sloppy in the second and gave away the penalty that was the start of the United fight-back. Will need to find his best form next season if he’s to keep his place week in week out. (Justin)

John McGinn – 6

Quick thinking from McGinn allowed Villa to regain possession in United’s box and create the opening goal. Defensive duties then became the priority for the second half, which cost him a yellow card. (Georgia)

Ross Barkley – 6

A tidy first half from Ross. It’s a relief to see him closing down and defending from the front. We needed this Ross throughout Grealish’s injury but let’s face it, we haven’t!

Tidy is possession looked to link up with a lot of players but mainly our left side but this fizzled out 2nd half like most our players. With only 5 games to give DS a decision to make this will certainly be a tick in the return to Chelsea box. (Gary)

Bertrand Traore – 7

Good first half and scored an absolute screamer! But that was about it and was non-existent second half like most of the team. (Justin)

Anwar El Ghazi – 5

Quiet game from the Dutchman following his winning goal against Everton. Didn’t see much from him throughout the game and was eventually substituted for Keinan Davis. (Adam)

Ollie Watkins – 5

Continued to press high and work hard as always, which resulted in a booking in the first half following a mistimed tackle on Maguire. His few chances were overshadowed by a second yellow card in the final moments due to apparent simulation. (Georgia)

Substitutes:

Jacob Ramsey (on for Luiz – 65th minute)

Hard game for the youngster to come on and try and turn the tide. (Ryan)

Wesley (on for Barkley – 77th minute)

More minutes in the bank. (Ryan)

Keinan Davis (on for El Ghazi – 77th minute)

Threw his weight around in a bid to get us back in the game. I’d expect him to start against Everton on Thursday night. (Ryan)

Subs not used:

Heaton, Elmohamady, Nakamba, Hause, Philogene-Bidace, Chukwuemeka.

Goals:

AVFC | Traore (24)

MUFC | Fernandes (PEN – 52)

MUFC | Greenwood (56)

MUFC | Cavani (87)
