Goals from Danny Ings and Anwar El Ghazi sealed a 2-0 victory against Steve Bruce’s Newcastle United!

Strange one this was, Martinez didn’t have a single save to make all game but was heavily involved in two key moments of the game!
First up, a one-on-one with Callum Wilson – Martinez stood up well as the striker spurned his opportunity to put ‘The Toon’ in front.
Secondly, BANG – Martinez took Wilson clean out in the penalty area – the referee duly pointing to spot, only for it to be overturned by VAR for an offside in the build-up! (Would of saved it anyway!)
Matty Cash – 8
Are you Danny Higginbotham in disguise!?
Cash has unleashed his long throw attribute since the arrival of Austin MacPhee – and to full effect! Clearly getting a bit of stick from the travelling support he pinged a bullet throw for Mings to flick on and Ings to acrobatically finish!
Enjoyed playing in-front of the Villa faithful as myself and Luke attempted to sign him up to the podcast team post-match!
Ezri Konsa – 7.5
Solid performance from Mr Dependable! Dealt with Wilson extremely well.

Tyrone Mings (C) – 7.5
Our Captain lead the side out to a packed-out Villa Park – it was an incredible noise that greeted them so it must have been an amazing experience not just for us fans but the players as well!
That noise was cancelled out on 4 minutes as Wilson easily shook off Mings to go through one-on-one with Martinez, fortunately for Mings, Wilson fired wide.
It’s a side to his game he needs to improve, as once he becomes embroidered in a physical battle he comes off second best! Joelinton and Zaha are examples from last season!
Gaint leap to flick on for the opening goal, Mings will play a major part in our new set-piece routines.
Ashley Young – 7
A sight I thought I’d never see again – Ashley Young in a Villa shirt hugging the left-hand touch line.
With both Young and El Ghazi starting on the left we lost the width on that side with both looking to cut inside, plus the link-up between the two requires a lot of work.
Young’s experience will be vital for us this season!

Jacob Ramsey – 9* MOTM
A statement performance from JJ.
For me, he finally announced himself to what he can bring to this Aston Villa squad. I was highly impressed with the way he managed himself playing in-front of a returning Villa crowd, once he grew into game, you could see his confidence growing.
Ramsey drove the team forward on several occasions, looking to conduct the play from the midfield – a bright, positive and confident performance!
Emi Buendia – 7
A lot of Buendia’s hard work went largely unnoticed, back on his favoured right hand side, he put some solid graft in throughout the game.
One highlight in particular was the little dink over Ritchie’s head in our own area before playing a lovely waited ball inside to McGinn as we sprung the counter – Magic!

Ice cold penalty yet again from the Dutch man, dispatching expertly in front of a packed out Holte End!
Still moments of sloppiness in this game he needs to eradicate if he’s to feature on a regular basis this season!
Danny Ings – 8.5
PREDATOR! It was some strike from Danny Ings – a beautiful bicycle kick that erupted Villa Park into a cauldron of noise!
All-round play was excellent – oh, and how good is it to see him scoring these goals for us at Villa Park instead of against us!
