PLAYER RATINGS | Aston Villa 2-3 Wolverhampton Wanderers

share

Author

A painfully frustrating afternoon at Villa Park, cruising 2-0 with 10 minutes to play, Villa collapsed to a 2-3 defeat!

Goals from Danny Ings and John McGinn looked to have sealed the 3 points for Villa heading into the final 10 minutes. Still, Wolves heads didn’t drop.

Roman Saiss reduced the deficit, followed by Conor Coady grabbing an 85th-minute equaliser. Wolves claimed an unlikely victory with Ruban Neves’ deflected free-kick deep into injury time which found the bottom corner past a stranded Emi Martinez.

Joining me today, Gary Plaza, Joey Millington, Tom Parker and Alex DeSouza.

STARTING LINE-UP

Formation 3-5-2

Emi Martinez – 6

It says a lot about the confidence I have in Emi Martinez that when Adama Traore went one-on-one with him in the first half, I had complete faith he’d come out on top. Even in his jetlagged and knackered state.

That was going to be my write up until the final ten minutes happened. I don’t *think* any of the Wolves goals were his fault, but then my Holte End vantage point wasn’t the best, and I’m not mentally ready to watch the highlights. Just in case, I’m going to arbitrarily knock off a point from the 7/10 I was prepared to give him. Tom

Matty Cash – 7.5

The former Forest man started his career further up the pitch, and his performance against Wolves showed his impressive attacking prowess. With Wolves danger man Adama Traoré operating centrally, wing back Cash was not asked too many questions by Wolves and marauded forward with great regularity and success. He created chances and had a couple of opportunities himself but could not replicate his Everton finish. It is no surprise that things started to unravel when ‘Cashy’ hobbled off late on, as Villa lost the out-ball on the right to get the team up the pitch. Joey

Ezri Konsa – 6

This is a hard one; how can you look so great for 80 minutes then for 10 minutes look like you’ve never played football before.

He looked so comfortable all game pocketing Traore and Hwang. Great composure, as we’ve come to expect from him.

However, the team folded in the last 10 minutes with forced substitutions. I feel Hause on, and Konsa to RB would’ve been the better substitution to see the game out. Plaza

Tyrone Mings – 4

It’s hard to pinpoint what happened in the last ten minutes of this game, but I felt Mings set the tone by being too nonchalant, which was epitomised by him hoofing the ball aimlessly shortly after we took the lead.

Surrendering a lead so meekly as we did, so I can’t give a higher rating, even though we were in cruise control for 90% of the match. Alex

Axel Tuanzebe – 4

Arguably Axel’s worst performance in a Villa shirt. Returning to replace Hause, he was very shaky in the opening 45 minutes, dangerously giving away possession twice that led to Wolves having attempts on goal, once to Hwang and then to Traore, who ripped through the heart of the Villa team but was unable to beat Emi Martinez!

Not strong enough in the final 10 minutes and should have done better to clear before the equaliser!

Disappointing display from a player I rate highly! Ryan

Matt Targett – 6

Again, my rating for Targett was all set to commend a fine defensive display whilst acknowledging the fact that wing-back is not his position.

As with Martinez, I can’t say with confidence that either of the first two goals was his fault, and the third was just a freak occurrence. My heart says score him 7/10, but my head has gone for another arbitrary downgrade of one point. Tom

Douglas Luiz – 8

Another strong performance from Brazilian, who retained his place despite being away with his national team till the early hours on Friday!

Luiz excellently executed the role of the defensive midfielder, read the game well to steal back the ball, and superb in retaining possession!

Understandably withdrawn to a standing ovation following his international exploits. Ryan

John McGinn – 9

The best player on the pitch by some distance. Sat on the ageing Moutinho for much of the game and gave the much-decorated midfielder a torrid time. McGinn popped up in dangerous pockets in and around the Wolves box and supplied a devastating cross with his weak foot for Ings’ goal, as well as scoring one himself, with the aid of a deflection. He covered every blade of grass and will rightfully be asking himself how he came out on the losing side. He looks to be adding consistent quality end product to his high-octane style of play. Joey

Emi Buendia – 7.5

Best game for us so far. Superb through ball to Ings in the first half should’ve been finished only for a super save from Sa.

He was everywhere in midfield with some of the best pressing and closing down I’ve seen from a Villa Player in recent times.

I was surprised when Dean Smith replaced him, but DS admitted he asked to be replaced as he had nothing left. Should we be concerned that he could only give everything for 75 minutes? Plaza

Danny Ings – 5

I don’t think it was a great day at the office for Danny Ings. Sure, he got a goal, but I thought his miss in the first half after a beautiful Buendia through ball was poor, and he should have been hitting the target with his chance at the end when the score was poised at 2-2. It’s harsh, I know it is, but a player with his reputation needs to put away more than one in three chances of that quality. Tom

Ollie Watkins – 5

I thought he made some decent runs and should have scored had he got one of his shots out earlier. He still doesn’t seem to be hitting the heights of last season, but with a bit more time and matches under his belt, it’ll come. Alex

Substitutions:

Marvelous Nakamba (on for Douglas Luiz – 67th minute) – 4

Struggling to assert himself into the game, coupled with the withdrawal of Buendia, Villa lost control in the midfield! Ryan

Jacob Ramsey (on for Buendia – 73rd minute) – 4

Only on for 15 minutes in which we conceded 3 goals. Not blaming him for the goals but every player on the pitch would get a 3 or 4 for the ending of the game. Plaza

Ashley Young (on for Cash – 78th minute) – 4

Goals:

Aston Villa:

Ings (48), McGinn (68)

Wolves:

Saiss (80), Coady (85), Neves (90+5)

Opposition:

Wolves (3-5-2): Sa; Saiss, Coady, Kilman; Semedo, Moutinho (Podence, 74), Dendoncker, Neves, Marcal (Fabio Silva); Hwang (Jimenez, 87), Traore.

Subs not used: Moulden, Ruddy, Hoever, Ait-Nouri, Boly, Cundle.
