Aston Villa recorded their fifth consecutive win in the Premier League for the first time in 25 years with an explosive performance to blow away Newcastle United!

Let’s hear the fans’ post-match thoughts about the players’ individual performances.

EMILIANO MARTINEZ – 8

A relatively comfortable display from Villa’s number one. A sharp save preventing Alexander Isak was all that was asked of the Argentine in the first half, and another save in the second, denying Callum Wilson from close-range helped ‘Dibu’ to a sixth clean sheet in eight games.”

– Liam Davies

ASHLEY YOUNG – 8

“Another Rolls Royce performance from the true diamond that is Ashley Young. Ash played a crucial part in the Villa side that saw success in the mid-to-late 00’s and is somehow now playing an equally crucial role in the reprise under Unai Emery. A totally cool, calm and collected performance for Ash. Had some great recoveries and battles against a high-pressure Newcastle forward line and looked to barely break a sweat. Pure class.”

– Hannah Gowen

TYRONE MINGS – 9

“As the Holte End sang ‘He was here, there, every f***ing where’. Another clean sheet, solid from minute one to ninety. Never looked to be troubled by any of Newcastle’s forward options. Alongside John Stones the standout centre half in the league. Simply majestic and clearly enjoying proving some people wrong.

– Ivan McDouall

EZRI KONSA – 8.5

Fantastic! Loving the Konsa of old. Not a single instance where he was troubled today and this is meant to be one of the best opponents in the league. Makes the game look so easy at times. With the performances of late of both Konsa and Mings, I can’t see Carlos getting minutes. What a problem to have. Could Mr Southgate be calling soon?

– Gary Plaza

ÁLEX MORENO – 10

“A simply perfect display from the Spaniard who was faultless up and down the Villa left-side yesterday afternoon. Moreno, with the help of both Jacob Ramsey and Ollie Watkins, terrorised the likes of Joe Willock and Kieran Trippier and was a constant threat down that side of the pitch. The 29-year-old has been a revelation since joining in January and proved just why Unai Emery wanted him, providing the assist for Watkins’ first goal and carrying danger wherever he tread – he was also effective defensively and denied Jacob Murphy at every opportunity in the first 45. Magnifica!”

– Liam Davies

DOUGLAS LUIZ – 8

“Overshadowed by Dendoncker, however still a top class performance. Not afraid to stick a boot in but equally happy to try and be creative moving forward. The full package – seems incapable of having a bad game at the moment.

– Ivan McDouall

LEANDER DENDONCKER – 8

An excellent decision to slot the big Donk into midfield for the injured Bailey. Leander’s admission to the starting XI allowed McGinn to push further forward, and his steady anchoring of the midfield alongside Dougie Luiz allowed Villa to really kick on and control the game. Considering he hasn’t had much football of late, Dendonker looked extremely comfortable and did absolutely everything he needed to. A very tidy performance and a great reminder of why we signed him.”

– Hannah Gowen

JOHN MCGINN – 9

“What a masterclass putting McGinn on Dan Burn. McGinn had the run on him all game and for his size he also outmuscled him throughout. One driving run produced an effort on goal which was high and wide, the next driving run was much more rewarding. He found Moreno who picked out Ollie to fire in the second. Super John McGinn is back!

– Gary Plaza

EMILIANO BUENDIA – 8

“One of Buendia’s best performances of the season. Emi was an absolute nuisance for Newcastle, whether it be linking up play through the middle or feeding in tricky balls through to his team mates, or even winning free kicks, Buendia was popping up all over the park and ran his absolute socks off all game. Had a couple of half decent chances in front of goal too. Another goal contribution in the way of an assist, too. Emi is really finding some of his best Villa form under Unai but there’s clearly so much more we can hope to see from him”.

JACOB RAMSEY – 9

“The 21-year-old showed his worth yesterday afternoon. A mesmerising display, in front of England manager Gareth Southgate, had Villa Park watering at the mouth. Last season’s young player of the month was electric down the left hand side; his decision-making was flawless and his ability on the ball truly demonstrated his class. The former Doncaster Rovers loanee grabbed the game’s opening goal, firing home on his weak foot after Watkins’ terrific lay-off in the 11th minute. The young midfielder was effective for the remainder of the match – both offensively and defensively – and was unlucky not to grab a brace, striking the bar after Alex Moreno’s well-worked cross. The Perry Barr born lad showed exactly why he is crucial to Emery’s side and (after the post-match interview) set forth his desire to continue performing from now until the end of the season.”

– Liam Davies

Chambers 85′ – 6: “Not too much to comment on Villa’s number 16 who came on with just five minutes to go, replacing a superb Jacob Ramsey. The former Arsenal man cleared a few balls that entered the box, dealing with the Newcastle danger well, and dropping into that defensive midfield role comfortably yet again. The 28-year-old is slowly becoming Mr Reliable for Unai Emery in that deep midfield position.”

OLLIE WATKINS – 9.5

“After today I expect a public apology from Southgate! What a performance from Ollie, quite easily the best form of his life thanks to Emery. Almost the perfect start where he ran clear only to see his effort hit the post. His head stayed high though and he found Ramsey with a fantastic header to open the scoring. Second half he was simply unplayable. 2 goals and a third ruled out for the smallest margin. Fully deserves the rumoured new deal.”

– Gary Plaza

Duran 91′ – N/A : Helped see the game out but no real impact with the few minutes he had. Booked.
