Author

Aston Villa recorded their first win at Villa Park since early December with an emphatic 4-0 victory over in-form Southampton.

Goals from Ollie Watkins, Douglas Luiz, Phillipe Coutinho and Danny Ings sealed an excellent result for The Villans!

Let’s see how the Villa Fans rated our stars in Claret and Blue

STARTING LINE-UP

Formation 4-3-1-2

Emi Martinez – 7.5

Rating contribution from Gary Plaza

Largely a spectator today with such a superb display by every player infront of him. I think this will go down as one of his easiest clean sheets in a Villa shirt.

Matty Cash – 8.5

Rating contribution from Joey Millington

Matty Cash looks much more effective with his new slightly deeper position. This did not stop the full back from picking the right moments to race forward and wreak havoc in the attacking third. The two players on Cash’s flank were taken off prematurely, Elyounoussi had struggled to get round the Polish international, whilst Perraud will be waking up in a cold sweat at the thought of Cash sprinting past him time after time. Cash got a brilliant assist for Ings, in another display of his improving end product.

Calum Chambers – 9

Rating contribution from Liam Davies

There was a minor meltdown prior to this game from Villa fans after news broke that Ezri Konsa wasn’t involved and Chambers was starting. The No.16 did not let us down however and put in a superb performance at the back, but it was the moment of magic at the other end that was the ex-Arsenal defender’s standout contribution after executing a fantastic trivela pass through to Philippe Coutinho for Douglas Luiz’s goal.

Great day for the January signing who makes a case for consecutive starts with that display.

Tyrone Mings – 8

Rating contribution from Ryan Mckeown

Solid performance again from the skipper who recovered from an early defensive mix-up to put in a composed performance.

Organised the defensive unit very well after the pre-match loss of Konsa and Digne.

Ashley Young – 7.5

Rating contribution from Gary Plaza

Rolling back the years today with such a good performance and also shows that Targett wasn’t needed for cover.

Very experienced performance, dealt with Livramento and Armstrong comfortably.

Douglas Luiz – 9

Rating contribution from Liam Davies

The Brazilian has been heavily scrutinised at times this season, especially since the Marvelous Nakamba injury that saw Luiz move to the unfavourable holding role.

The No.6 bossed things in the middle of the park this weekend however, and topped a fine performance off with a goal; tapping the ball home from Coutinho’s cutback before the end of the first-half. Craque.

John McGinn – 7.5

Rating contribution from Joey Millington

John McGinn has reacted to criticism with a couple of all-action performances as he looks to get back to his bustling best. He misplaced a few passes, but that was because he was attempting more difficult, penetrative balls and made a game high four key passes. The Scottish midfielder seems to have his mojo back and now needs to regain the consistency which has been a feature of his play in recent years.

Jacob Ramsey – 7.5

Rating contribution from Ryan Mckeown

Another mature performance from the 20 year-old midfielder.

Played well both in-and-out of possession in a very congested and narrow midfield.

Continues to grow into a very competent Premier League midfielder.

Danny Ings – 9

Rating contribution from Joey Millington

Having spent a large portion of his time at Villa trying to strike up a partnership with Watkins, it finally clicked on Saturday. Ings was superb all afternoon against his old club and was a threat throughout. The forward, who is best known for his predatory instinct, was a creative force as he dropped deep to link up play. He set up goals for Watkins and Coutinho before adding a trademark side footed finish past a top shot-stopper in Fraser Forster. Coutinho will get all the headlines, and rightly so, but this was Ings best performance in a Villa shirt by some distance as he came back to haunt his former employers.

*Phillipe Coutinho – 9

Rating contribution from Gary Plaza

Another superb performance and another reason why we need him permanently.

His first half was brilliant with a great assist allowing Luiz to slot home the second. The only markdown was for his poor finish when through one on one at the end of the first half.

Second half was much the same with superb link up play and getting the ball and team moving forwards. He got his reward in the end with a superb turn and finish to make it 3-0.

Subbed off when the job was done.

Ollie Watkins – 9

Rating contribution from Liam Davies

The inform striker impresses again and makes it two goals in as many games to open the scoring for Aston Villa. It was well worked between the Villan’s frontmen after Philippe Coutinho sprays a ball into Danny Ings who laid a perfect ball into Watkins. The No.11 excellently outwits the onrushing Jack Stephens with an ankle-breaking turn before coolly finishing past goalkeeper Fraser Forster.

The 25 year old demonstrated his tirelessness and relentless work-rate throughout the game too; a characteristic that makes him a fan favourite at the club. It would have been a 10/10 performance, if not for the acquisition of a yellow card picked up on 74 minutes. Well done regardless, Ollie!

Substitutions

Morgan Sanson – 6

on for Danny Ings, 72nd minute

Came on late on for Danny Ings. It is the second week in a row that the midfielder has had a 20 minute cameo with Villa in a comfortable position and once again he managed the game well and barely put a foot wrong. Joey Millington

Leon Bailey – 6

on for Jacob Ramsey, 78th minute

Valuable minutes for the Jamaican international as he looks to regain full match fitness. Ryan Mckeown

Emi BuendiaN/A

on for Philippe Coutinho, 81st minute

Short cameo for Buendia with not much time to make an impact although he did almost get clear to add a fifth in stoppage time. Gary Plaza

Not used | Robin Olsen, Bertrand Traore, Kortney Hause, Tommi O’Reilly, Tim Iroegbunam, Ben Chrisene.
