PLAYER RATINGS | BOLTON 1-4 ASTON VILLA

Aston Villa recovered from falling a goal behind to beat Bolton Wanderers 1-4 on Tuesday night at the University of Bolton Stadium.

Goals from Douglas Luiz, Danny Ings, Lucas Digne and Leon Bailey cancelled out Dion Charles’ opener.

Let’s hear the fans post-match thoughts about the players’ individual performances.

EMI MARTINEZ – 7

Another clean sheet opportunity missed but not at the fault of Emi. Didn’t really face many troubles after Bolton’s opener, a standard display.

Hannah Gowen

ASHLEY YOUNG – 7

Enjoyed this performance from the veteran – although he doesn’t play or look 37! Always committed and in the opposition and officials faces which is why fans love him. Gives Villa an edge when he’s around. Banging nutmeg in the second half and provided a good outlet on the right. Kept the rest of those alongside and ahead of him in check.

– Ivan McDouall

TYRONE MINGS – 6.5

Not alone in starting shakily. Recovered well and won his aerial duals. No nonsense clearing when Villa came under a period of pressure. Not vintage Mings but he played his part.

– Joey Millington

CALUM CHAMBERS – 5

Not his strongest appearance in claret and blue. At fault for the opening goal as Bolton’s Kieran Lee turned the defender to set up Dion Charles. For his first start of the season, Chambers didn’t set the game alight in what was a mediocre performance.

– Liam Bryan

LUCAS DIGNE – 5.5

It’s fair to say it’s been a really frustrating night for Digne however there’s definitely been some positives. The Frenchman once again failed to make an impression for much of the first half and could be considered at fault for the Bolton goal. However, in the second half, we got to see some more attacking flair with link ups with the likes of Coutinho. Finally, Digne grabbed his first goal in claret and blue. Hopefully, this boosts the former Evertonians confidence and leads him to replicate his form in a Toffee’s shirt.

– Ellis Burnett

BOUBARCAR KAMARA – 6

Tough night for the Villa number 44. Seemed to be overly keen to win the ball back when he could have screened and pushed play away – as a result seemed to be constantly penalised. Error in build up to Bolton goal exemplified probably his weakest showing since arriving in the Summer. Will have to do it all again on Sunday – I’d wager he would find that easier with Luiz alongside him.

– Ivan McDouall

DOUGLAS LUIZ – 6

Astutely scored Villa’s equaliser directly from a corner. Mostly retained possession well throughout the fixture. Not an impressive performance against Bolton Wanderers but effective in key moments to contribute towards Villa’s victory.

– Liam Bryan

JOHN MCGINN – 5

A pretty average, and poor at times, performance from John McGinn – namely due to misplaced passes and loss of possession. Felt the midfield became stronger second half, and he did attempt to support the attack, but generally a lacklustre display.

– Hannah Gowen

PHILLIPE COUTINHO – 7.5

Had lumps kicked out of him in the first half. When Villa struggled Coutinho looked the greatest source of creativity. Won the corner from which Luiz scored and was instrumental in setting Ings away to win the penalty. Whilst it was a League One side, the little Brazilian will hope to find his form in the Premier League in the coming weeks.

– Joey Millington

OLLIE WATKINS – 6

Better in some areas but crucially, Watkins is still missing a few elements to his game. As usual, Watkins work rate and runs into space cannot be criticised but for every good run they’re seemed to be a bad touch or an offside call. Another alarming area of Ollie’s game is the finishing. I counted two one on ones which he squandered. That’s just not good enough. Having said that, creatively, Watkins was very good today.

Ellis Burnett

DANNY INGS – 7

An extremely quiet first half from the former Saints forward. Could have scored early in the second half with a left footed effort, but didn’t have to wait long to find the net. Looked offside when running through on goal, but rounded the goalkeeper cleverly and dusted himself off to give Villa the much coveted go ahead goal. Set up Digne well for the third.

– Joey Millington

SUBS

RAMSEY – 5

on for Coutinho, 71 minutes

Limited scope to make a huge impact but am still wondering how he didn’t score at the death when it seemed harder not to. Sloppy.

– Ivan McDouall
BUENDIA – 6

on for Kamara, 71 minutes

Came on with Villa cruising. Ticked it over with some sharp passing and almost scored after a great run down the left. Claimed an assist with the pass to Bailey for the final goal. Will hope to retain his starting berth in the League on Sunday.

– Joey Millington
BAILEY – 7

on for Watkins, 71 minutes

Made an impression off the bench with his injection of pace. Superb bit of footwork and a lovely placed finish for the goal.

– Ellis Burnett
ARCHER – 6

on for Ings, 82 minutes

The fox in the box looked as lively as ever in his short cameo off the bench. Could have scored after a wonderful chop back on his right foot, but Dixon saved superbly. He may yet head out on loan, but if not he is waiting in the wings to provide that finishing touch off the bench.

– Joey Millingto n

Tim Iroegbunam on for Douglas Luiz, 86 minute

Subs not used: Robin Olsen, Matty Cash, Ezri Konsa, Josh Feeney.
