PLAYER RATINGS | CRYSTAL PALACE 3-1 ASTON VILLA

Crystal Palace defeated Aston Villa 3-1 at Selhurst Park on Saturday afternoon in the Premier League.

The visitors took an early lead at Selhurst Park before being quickly reeled in by Palace.

Wilfried Zaha scored his second goal of the game to put the hosts ahead 2-1, and substitute Jean-Philippe Mateta added a third.

Let’s hear the fans post-match thoughts about the players’ individual performances.

EMI MARTINEZ – 7

Penny for his thoughts as he surveys what’s going on in front of him. Kept Villa in the game at times – notably from Ayew and also Guehi in the passage of play that ultimately led to the penalty. Phenomenal save from Zaha’s spot kick and wasn’t far from the rebound. Looked like he wanted to spark Wilf out immediately after. Loses a point for first Palace goal – by his own standards will be disappointed to be beaten in that manner”.

– Ivan McDouall

MATTY CASH – 4

“Tried hard to get forward and have an impact on the game, but spent most of the game repelling the incessant palace attacks”.

– Justin Hawthorne

TYRONE MINGS – 5.5

“Played a key role in the opener; firing a long-ball into Bailey to assist Watkins finish”.

Remained calm throughout as his partner faulted”.

– Ryan Mckeown

EZRI KONSA – 3

“What ever happened to Ezri Konsa? One of our stand out players 20/21. He has had a massive fall from grace and i don’t see a return”.

“Started poorly playing a cross field ball straight to Palace and putting us in trouble. Never looked comfortable and Zaha had him on toast all game”.

We need improvements at Konsa’s expense. We will buy a new CB in the next 11 days and Konsa will likely leave next summer. Gutted when less than 2 years ago we were shocked he wasn’t in the England team”.

– Gary Plaza

LUCAS DIGNE – 4

I’ve rated Digne on here for every game this season and have yet to be able to say much positive. Part of a defence in absolute turmoil and – much to his own chagrin – regularly got pulled inside. Completely out of sorts and looks a way off re-discovering the form that encouraged Villa to see him as an upgrade on Targett. Yes penalty was unlucky but when you’re in this rut of form nothing goes for you. Whoever starts at left back at Bolton will be aware that first choice left back is up for debate“.

– Ivan McDouall

BOUBARCAR KAMARA – 4

Kamara worked hard to get a hold of the ball, but he was frequently overrun in midfield. He wasn’t sure what hit him today with Palace attack after Palace attack.”

– Justin Hawthorne

JACOB RAMSEY – 4

Anonymous. That’s it“.

– Ivan McDouall

JOHN MCGINN – 3

Gerrard making him captain as resulted in McGinn being non existant and missing since. Poor again from our captain”.

“What’s more worrying is his lack of leadership. Not once did we hear or see him rallying the team and getting them fighting”.

“Has he got the mentality to turn this around? We need a captain to rally the troops”.

– Gary Plaza

EMILIANO BUENDIA – 6

Frustrating performance for the chosen one. Gave the ball away cheaply on a number of occasions including first goal and wasted a golden opportunity to put Villa 2-1 up when shooting straight at Guaita when 12 yards out. Villa didn’t have enough forward momentum for him to influence – needs to stay in team though, pointless dropping him after one inept team performance“.

– Ivan McDouall

OLLIE WATKINS – 7

“Took his goal well and really lead the line well”.

Hold up play was really good and much better than last season, unfortunately it was the 10 players behind him that went missing today”.

Give him chances and he scores. He needs more from others”.

– Gary Plaza

LEON BAILEY – 6

Great assist for the opener, then relatively quiet until hitting the crossbar with a great effort in the second half. One of the few players who has not disgraced themselves“.

– Justin Hawthorne

SUBS

INGS – 5

on for Bailey, 66 minutes

“Neither here nor there. The switch to 2 up front failed to deliver any impact”.

– Ivan McDouall
LUIZ – 5

on for McGinn, 72 minutes

Not on the pitch long enough to make a difference”.

There have been many comments recently around Coutinho/Buendia and who should start. The real comments and discussions should be why is Ramsey starting ahead of Luiz”.

Luiz is much more consistent and we need him! We need SG to sort this out or he’ll be gone by Christmas.”

– Gary Plaza
COUTINHO – N/A

on for Buendia, 72 minutes

Subs not used: Robin Olsen, Calum Chambers, Ludwig Augustinsson, Ashley Young, Marvelous Nakamba, Cameron Archer.
