PLAYER RATINGS | Liverpool 1-0 Aston Villa

Author

Aston Villa travelled to Anfield on the back of a win against Leicester City and a good second-half performance at home to City.

For large periods it was backs against the wall but we stuck to the task well. It was only a bit of magic from Salah that got the wrong side of Mings who bought him down that led to the only goal. We rallied in the final 20 and gave as good as we got.

Liverpool are in great form and will surely be one of the teams that will be fighting it out for the title! Overall, it was a fair result, and we now look ahead to Norwich next week.

STARTING LINE-UP

Formation 4-3-3

Emi Martinez – 8

Pictured: Aston Villa’s Emi Martinez

Another great game from probably our most consistent and dependable player, made some good saves and commanded his box well, no chance with the penalty.

Matty Cash – 8

Good showing again from Matty, lots of energy and willingness to get forward. Loves a tackle as well.

Ezri Konsa – 8

Back to his best today, gave everything in trying to repel the constant Liverpool attacks and showed great composure at times.

Tyrone Mings – 8

Colossal performance from the Captain, only blighted by giving the penalty away to Salah who can do that to anyone.

Mings was sublime in the air and blocked numerous shots.

Matt Targett – 8

Completing the back five was Targett who like Cash was very good today and helped keep them at bay for most of the 90 minutes. Will be pleased with his efforts.

Marvelous Nakamba – 7

Probably his poorest game since Gerrard came in, wasn’t terrible just not up to his recent standards. Booked and withdrawn to stop the risk of getting sent off.

John McGinn – 9

For me, he was the man of the match, his tireless running and chasing every ball was infectious to see. Beginning to blossom in the new regime and I think there is still more to come.

Douglas Luiz – 7.5

Another solid afternoons work from the likeable Brazilian, occasionally was a bit rash when defending in his own box but was a very willing worker.

Ashley Young – 8

Our utility man just keeps putting in some excellent displays, left back one game right wing the next. His experience has already been a huge factor in the amount of time he’s getting.

A massive plus point this season so far.

Jacob Ramsey – 7

A reasonably quiet afternoon for the academy graduate worked hard but didn’t have a huge impact on the game, was withdrawn when we tried to chase the game late on

Ollie Watkins – 8

Another great effort from the ever-willing forward was always going to have to do a lot of work on his own upfront. Created a couple of half-chances with his relentless running and closing down.

Substitutions

Morgan Sanson (on for Nakamba, 57) 8

Sanson is starting to push his cause now with some great appearances off the bench, shows great composure and looks like a top player. It’s only a matter of time before we see him from the start.

Emi Buendia (on for Young, 69) 7

Another who had an impact late on. tried to get on the ball and make things happen.

Danny Ings (on for Ramsey, 74) 7

Looked lively and sharp in the limited time he had, nice to have him fit again.

Subs not used: Jed Steer, Axel Tuanzebe, Trezeguet, Anwar El Ghazi, Kortney Hause, Carney Chukwuemeka.

Goals

Liverpool: Salah penalty (66)

Opposition

Liverpool (4-3-3): Alisson Becker; Trent Alexander-Arnold, Joel Matip, Virgil van Djik, Andy Robertson; Thaigo (James Milner, 82), Jordan Henderson, Fabinho; Mo Salah, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain (Diogo Jota 58), Sadio Mane (Takumi Minamino, 88).
