STARTING LINE-UP

Formation: 4-1-2-3

Emi Martinez – 7

Largely untroubled throughout the game, but when called into action he was quick off his line, we saw safe hands and good distribution as we’ve come to expect. Targett’s header was arguably the biggest test for our keeper over 90 minutes. So so close to drawing level with Ederson on 15 clean sheets for the season, but couldn’t do anything about the goal in injury time. (ABrew)

Ahmed Elmohamady – 6

Kept his place despite Cash’s return to the squad, will possibly be his last start for us, one of my favourite players of the last few years but his time is nearly up. (JH)

Ezri Konsa – 7

Konsa was possibly man of the match but I think Targett may have edged it. He mopped up for Mings more than once and his reading of the game was brilliant again, other than for the goal. (x)

Tryone Mings – 6

This was a real heavyweight bout, going toe-to-toe with Joelinton. Unfortunately, Tyrone came off second best and struggled with the Newcastle number nine tonight. Yes, he was called upon to do the dirty work in the back four and yes, he was seconds from a clean sheet, but he’ll feel disappointed with his performance. (ABrew)

Matt Targett – 7 *

Good defensively and dangerous going forward, linked up well with El Ghazi and got another assist – putting in a sweet ball for Watkins. Another impressive performance from Matty ‘Mr Consistent’ Targett at the back for Villa this season. England call-up pending. (AM)

Douglas Luiz – 7

Douglas Luiz had a solid performance in both halves although he did make a couple of errors for the goal and the one that hit the bar. His weight of pass was on point as usual and he did well despite the presence of Fraser. (x)

John McGinn – 6

McGinn had a very average performance in the first half. I expected him to get forward a lot more than he did. Newcastle kept him very quiet but he did improve slightly in the second. (x)

Jacob Ramsey – 6

Tough game for the youngster but certainly one he’ll learn from. As he grows we’ll be looking for Ramsey to grab those games by the scruff of the neck, dictate the play and compose others around him. (RM)

Bertrand Traore – N/A

Started brightly, was decent on the ball, showing glimpses of his ability and was unlucky to go off injured. Hope it’s not a serious one and he’s available for the Spurs game next week! (AM)

Image

Trezeguet – 6

Started brightly faded badly, not alone in struggling for any form. One he will want to forget and move on to the next game. Looking a likely candidate now to be replaced in the summer if this form continues. (JH)

Ollie Watkins – 6

Incredibly frustrating night for Ollie. Feeding off scraps and whilst his usual running and intensity was there, his touch was off and it just wasn’t sticking tonight. Unlucky again to not get a goal, but unlike the previous five games without a goal, his overall performance just wasn’t up to his usual high standards. (ABrew)

Subsititutes

Anwar El Ghazi on for Traore (21st minute) – 5

You know Anwar will carry the ball & drive us forward, just thought tonight his final ball and decision making was poor, had the chance to wrap the game up at the death & couldn’t do it! El ghazi performs better with Grealish on the pitch and is so much more effective and dangerous for us. We all know the wide areas is somewhere where we need to strengthen next season if we want to progress. (AM)

Morgan Sanson on for Ramsey (59th minute)

Made some positive bursts through the midfield – we will see the best of Sanson next season. (RM)

Ross Barkley on for Trezeguet (67th minute)

Serveley lacking confidence. (RM)
