THE FPL DIARIES: TEAM SELECTION

share

Author

Embarrassingly enough, as someone who plays FPL every year, I am absolutely shocking at it. I can hardly ever finish a season, and my team-building skills are just not up to scratch. So what better way to demonstrate my terrible FPL skills than to create an FPL diary?

I’m hoping for a lot of pointers and advice from you people to help me better develop my skills. Let us commence on this journey together!

After each game week, I’ll go through my team and evaluate how I did. There will be a code at the bottom of this article that will allow you to play along with me on the Premier League app. So, let’s begin with the inaugural edition of the FPL Diaries and choose a team!

Words by: Ellis Burnett

GOALKEEPER: RAMSDALE

I was initially under the impression that goalkeepers didn’t really matter too much in this game. They don’t score you that many points, surely? Well, apparently I was wrong. VERY wrong!

Having said this, I still didn’t want to allocate too much of my budget to this position, so the perfect answer was Arsenal’s Ramsdale. The Englishman is the first choice and only costs £5 million, so it’s bound to be worth the money. 20.6% of people agree with me too!

DEFENDERS: MORENO, ESTUPINAN, ROBERTSON

I was somewhat proud of my choice of defenders because I thought they showed some fairly decent FPL skill. My logic was that surely the fullbacks are more likely to get assists, so let’s fill the defence with fullbacks.

I was stuck between Alexander-Arnold and Robertson for a while. The former is a bit more expensive, but the price is justified when you consider the scouser may be pushed into midfield for Liverpool. After deliberating for a while, I decided to go with Robertson instead and spend the funds elsewhere on a certain Norwegian Striker.

Moreno and Estupinan are both similar picks. Both left-handed players who play for teams that focus their attacking intent down the left-hand side For me, this means they’ll be bombing down the line, picking up important assists. There is the risk that Moreno might not be match-fit for GW 1, so there is a replacement waiting on the substitute bench.

MIDFIELDERS: HAVERTZ, DIABY, BOWEN, SALAH

When I first started building this team, there were two players around whom I wanted to build it. The first one is a Norwegian, which we’ll talk about shortly, and the second is Mo Salah. I’d argue that Salah is the more important of those picks, as his midfield position will lead to more points. This was a no-brainer for me.

Havertz and Diaby are the summer signings I’ve picked for my team. Havertz knows the Premier League really well, and I think that he could work wonders in this Arsenal team. The only problem is that we don’t really know what role the Germans will be playing. Aston Villa’s new Frenchman has been electric in preseason. I hope he can continue that in the league and earn this team some valuable points.

Bowen was my last pick in midfield, and again, it was quite an easy pick. He’s relatively cheap, and his team will depend on him to score a lot of goals. With West Ham struggling to recruit on the market, this could be a massive season for Bowen.

ATTACKERS: NKUNKU, JOAO PEDRO, HAALAND

Let’s start with by far the easiest choice and many people’s first name on the team sheet. Yes, that’s right. Joao Pedro looks like an exciting young prospect who impressed while at Watford. While I’m obviously joking about him being the easiest choice, Pedro could surprise a few people this season and thrive under Brighton’s attacking style of play.

Nkunku will be a risk for a number of reasons, but I highly rate him, so I’ve decided to include him for now. He is new to the league but looks to have thrived in preseason. The other massive warning sign is that he has a slight knock to his knee. This means there’s only a 75% chance of him playing. This may be one I change before the season starts.

Finally, it’s Haaland. The guy scores goals!

SUBS: Sarkic, Digne, Lampety, Fornals.

So there you have it; that’s the team so far. Tune in each week for a review of my FPL team and use the code below to join the FPL Diaries league!
