Aston Villa were soundly defeated by Bournemouth in their first Premier League match. This Saturday represents a chance to right some wrongs against an Everton team that suffered a much more reassuring defeat to Chelsea.
I caught up with @TheEvertonEnd to gain their thoughts on this weekendβs match.
UTV PODCAST X THE EVERTON END
Evertonβs first game of the season came in the form of a 1-0 defeat to Chelsea. What was your take on the start?
“Defeat was expected really because of the lack of signings and injury to DCL up top, and still no replacement for Richarlison.”
@TheEvertonEnd
The Toffeeβs transfer business has been a mixed bag this season with the loss of Richarlison and arrivals of Tarkowski and McNeil. What else would you like to see Everton do in the market?
“A left winger with end product to replace Richarlison has to be the priority before the window shuts.”
@TheEvertonEnd
Frank Lampard came into the job and pushed Everton towards Premier League safety when many thought it was impossible. Are you confident that Lampard can guide Everton higher up the table?
“Iβd like to hope so since it canβt get much worse than 16th, I see us falling somewhere between 12th-15th.”
@TheEvertonEnd
Finally, whats your score prediction for the game?
“2-1 Everton!”

OPPOSITION FOCUS | EVERTONβS TRANSFER BUSINESS
For many football fans, the summer transfer window is a time of rebuilding. This is no different for Villa’s opponents on Saturday, Everton, who have been very active in the transfer market. I’ll look at the ins and outs of Goodison Park before giving it a rating out of ten.
Let’s start with the departures, and it’s safe to say Everton have had a major purge. Gylfi Sigurdsson and former Villa player Fabian Delph were both released by Everton. This was a clever business move that reduced the average of the ageing squad.
Jonjoe Kenny, 25, and Cenk Tosun, 31, were also released. Despite bothΒ making 50 appearances for the club, neither player was able to take the Premier League by storm. Finally, young defender Jarrod Branthwaite joined PSV in the Netherlands to gain valuable experience.
Richarlison’s Β£52 million move to Spurs, on the other hand, has gotten the most attention. The experienced Premier League forward was Everton’s star player last time out, so his absence will be felt greatly. The question was how Everton would replace him.
Everton last lost a player as important as Richarlison, arguably Romelu Lukaku. It’s safe to say they didn’t do a great job of reinvesting that money in the team. This meant that getting it right this time was critical.
Everton have replaced Richarlison in an unusual manner, but that doesn’t mean it’s a bad one. Everton signed three defenders to replace their star attacker! The Toffees have strengthened their core with the addition of two Premier League-experienced centre backs.
Coady, Tarkowski, and Vinagre, have joined the Blues. Onana, a Ligue 1 player, has also joined the club from LOSC Lille. Finally, Everton signed one attacker, Dwight McNeil, who Lampard has long admired.
Despite losing their star player, I believe Everton had a very positive transfer window. They have added a lot of Premier League experience while keeping the squad young. Overall, I’d rate Toffee’s transfer business an 8/10.
