Aston Villa Formation 4-2-3-1

Emi Martinez – 8

Strong game once again, vital blocks and saves kept Rashford frustrated! Went the right way for the penatly so couldn’t have done anymore there. I always feel so safe in his hands. (NE)

Matty Cash – 8.5 (FAN VOTED – MOTM)

Put a delightful ball onto the head of Mings at the death, reminiscence of a certain David Beckham at Old Trafford. Decent shot parred by De Gea as he ventured forward more in the second half. Left frustrated by a lack of cover from Traore. (RM)

Ezri Konsa – 7

Partnered well alongside Mings, managed to reduce United to long range efforts. Neither of the goals were his blame. Look comfortable at the back. (SB)

Tyrone Mings – 7

A tough decision for Dean Smith to make before the game I imagine to replace an in-form Hause, but Tyrone is a leader and organiser on the pitch. Yes, he was at fault for the first goal but I still think he gave a good performance defensively and it was a shame he couldn’t redeem himself with the header to bring us level. (NE)

Matt Targett – 7

Another solid game, didn’t put a foot wrong all game. (LR)

John McGinn – 7

Tested De Gea early with a well controlled volley and pinged some banging cross-field balls into the wide areas. (RM)

Douglas Luiz – 7

Gave away a contentious penalty, solid in midfield alongside McGinn in what was an engrossing battle. (LR)

Anwar El Ghazi – 6.5

Lots of effort and industry but lacked the goal threat of late. (JH)

Jack Grealish – 8

Never lets the pressure get to him, in fact it just motives him more! Fantastic link up with Ollie and Traore, put some great crosses and balls into the box, just lacking the finishing from some of the others. (NE)

Bertrand Traore – 6

A game in which he grew into after a quiet start. A well taken goal which will give Smith a difficult decision when Trezeguet returns. (SB)

Ollie Watkins – 6

Just not happening for him and he looks frustrated, can’t fault his all round contribution but he will want to start scoring ASAP! (JH)

Substitutions:

Jacob Ramsey – 6 (on for Traore, 79 minute)

More Premier League minutes for the youngster.

Keinan Davis – 6 (on for El Ghazi, 83 minute)

Went close twice in the closing stages.

Subs not used:

Heaton, Guilbert, Elmohamady, Taylor, Hause, Nakamba, Hourihane
