Aston Villa Formation 4-2-3-1

Emi Martinez – 7

At least there was one spectator inside Villa Park tonight. Great save at the feet of Carroll in the first half, but otherwise it was a nice night off for Argentina’s imminent #1 (CH)

Matty Cash – 8

Still hard to believe he was a Championship player last season! What a signing! After 3 tough defensive away games it was great to see Cash on the attack, and linking up so well with Traore. (RM)

Ezri Konsa – 9 (FAN VOTED MOTM)

Ezri Konsa – Confident and composed performance at the back as usual, did his defensive duties well when rarely called upon. Clean Sheet. (LC)

Tyrone Mings – 7.5

Displayed his immense leadership qualities again. Terrific first half up against the experienced Andy Carroll and blocked well from a Lascelles’ header. Got caught overplaying on the halfway line, a trait in his game that needs improvement but that will be coached into him. Remember, this is only his second season as a Premier League centre half – he was a left back before landing at B6. (RM)

Matt Targett – 9

Matt Targett – Delivered some great crosses, ultimately leading to Watkins’ opener. Defensively sound yet again. (LC)

Marvelous Nakamba – 9

Came in for the suspended John McGinn, and he will have certainly given Dean Smith a selection headache. Kept possession well in the middle of the field and was always available and showing for the ball. Slotted in like he had been playing in the starting eleven all season. (RM)

Douglas Luiz – 7

Did what he had to do in slightly different role. Always steady and comfortable. (LC)

Ross Barkley – 7

Ross Barkley – Linked up well with Grealish and Watkins in the first half, always wanting the ball. Quieter second half but nonetheless a solid performance. (LC)

Jack Grealish – 8

An absolute maverick. He is just a joy to watch week in, week out. I run out of words now. His dismay of being substituted at the end shows how much every minute out there means to him. (CH)

Bertrand Traore – 9

Bertrand Traore – Very lively in the first half, oozed confidence when in possession. Superbly taken goal after great link up play with Grealish . (LC)

Ollie Watkins – 8.5

I think every fan genuinely believed when he nodded in the first that VAR was going to deny him yet again, but it has been coming and so deserved! Looked like he really enjoyed the frailties of Newcastle’s backline tonight and 100% work rate and effort as always. (CH)

Substitutions:

Trezeguet (on for Barkley, 80 minutes) 6

Went close late on, great to see him back! (RM)

El Ghazi (on for Traore, 80 minutes) 5

Came on alongside Trezeguet – makes a change from them replacing each other. (RM)

Ramsey (on for Grealish, 88 minutes) 5

Must of been wishing he weren’t coming on after seeing Grealish’ reaction. (RM)

Subs not used:

Heaton, Guilbert, Elmohamady, Taylor, Engels, Davis

UTV PODCAST | Man Of The Match

Ezri Konsa is the UTVPODCAST fan voted Man Of The Match, although, there was a awful lot of calls for Nakamba to be in the mix. See the reactions below:
