Aston Villa Formation 4-2-3-1

Emi Martinez – 6.5

A game of two halves. Martìnez made some essential saves in the first half, taking us into HT at 0-1. The second half, Burnley benefited from a set-piece and two poor defensive displays from the back row.

Emi’s time management and decision making in the first half was calm and reassuring as always, however, there appeared to be a miscommunication between him and Konsa which surprised us all, particularly with Konsa’s fiery reaction. (Dani)

Matty Cash – 6.5

Defensively done well, think traore in front doesn’t help him at times and the two goals from open play he was doubled up on due to traore not tracking back in time. Delivery into and around the box lacking, either a poor ball in or delaying it and having to go back allowing Burnley to reset. Great ball to Watkins in the first half which deserves a mention. (Dan Cullen)

Ezri Konsa – 6

Not directly at fault for the goals but will not be happy conceding 3 against Burnley. (JH)

Tyrone Mings – 6

Mings did make two good clearances, however, we conceded three goals in the second half. Despite this we could clearly hear him commanding from the back and having to get into some battles – not all of them won. One led to conceding a corner which gave Burnley their first goal. The other two goals conceded Mings wasn’t positioned to stop them. However, there are four on our back row and the blame does not lie solely with any one player. We threw away three points. (Dani)

Matt Targett – 6

Enjoyed a quiet first half but got doubled up on second half and struggled to deal with the physical nature of the Burnley attackers. (SB)

John McGinn – 7.5

Playing in a deeper role so naturally the box to box performances will decline and I think some fans are still judging him on playing as an 8. Thought he used the ball well, kept it simple, looked forward and played a lot of 1 touch stuff on the half turn through the lines allowing us to get running at Burnley. Great ball to Watkins first half could of had an assist and had a hand in second goal with simple but quick passes. (Dan Cullen)

Douglas Luiz – 5.5

Excellent vision with the assist for Grealish’ goal, but struggled to make much of an impact on the game. Struggled with Burnley’ direct style of play – off night for the Brazilian. (RM)

Ross Barkley – 6

Last season we were screaming out for someone like Barkley for everything he did in the first half. Carried the ball, picked passes, looked forward, clever flicks and touches in the right areas and very unlucky with the volley. Seemed to fade again after 60 mins and becomes a passenger off the ball, allowed mee to get a run on him for the equaliser which swung momentum for them. (Dan Cullen)

Jack Grealish – 9

The scoreline doesn’t reflect the impact, flair and beautifully creative football that Super Jack is intrinsically part of throughout the entire game. He could have had more than just the one goal and the runs he goes on are jaw-dropping exciting. Top shelf today, made us look like Brazil in the first half. (Dani)

Bertrand Traore – 7

Silky touches and dynamic moving forward first half, second half not at it (LR)

Ollie Watkins – 8

A man who has got his mojo back. Shots on target all over the shop and scored our first goal with a wonderful assist by Matt Targett. He terrorised the Burnley defence and never shies away from making a run. He could have scored more if it wasn’t for Pope having a superb night. Despite being clattered all over the park by Tarkowski, he remained strong and calm. Will be gutted we dropped 3 today. (Dani)

Substitutions:

El Ghazi (on for Barkley, 82 mins)

Trezeguet (on for Traore, 82 mins)

Davis (on for Luiz, 88 mins)

Little or no time for the substitutes to make an impact, slight criticism of DS – feel these changes could have been made sooner. (RM)

Subs not used:

Heaton, Ramsey, Elmohamady, Taylor, Engels, Nakamba.
