Calum Chambers has joined Aston Villa from Arsenal.
Aston Villa love to surprise us! Last Friday it was the news that Emi Martinez has extended his contract at the club, now this evening they’ve blindsided us again with the signing of Calum Chambers.
The 27-year-old arrives on a three-and-a-half-year deal and is Steven Gerrard’s fourth signing of the January window.
Chambers, a versatile defender, who is comfortable on the ball, will be well suited to Gerrard’s style of play, and will add both domestic and European experience to the defensive setup. He boasts 115 Premier League appearances, in comparison to Tyrone Mings, who’s at 105, Ezri Konsa with 81, and Kortney Hause who’s accumulated 32.
Although his versatility offers great depth to the squad; considering he’s also a very competent right-back, this is a fresh challenge for the 27-year-old, who will be fully revitalised following his move to the club. I fully expect Chambers to add instant pressure on Ezri Konsa and Tyrone Mings for a starting position.
Chambers had his to say on joining Aston Villa.
“It’s a great club, it’s a massive club. I’ve played at Villa Park a few times and it’s great stadium with a great set of fans,” he said.
“The manager did very well at Rangers. He’s a young, exciting manager and I can’t wait to work with him.”
Chambers added: “It’s a great stage to be joining the club at. The club’s building momentum and it’s an exciting time to be here.
“You can really feel that being in and around the building. You can feel the energy around the place.
“I feel like I’ve joined at a great time and I can’t wait to get started and give it my all.”
Financially, it’s a risk-free deal for Villa; although not confirmed, reports suggest he signed on a free transfer, after his Arsenal contract was due to expire in the summer. A solid signing. #WelcomeCalum.

Aston Villa Women also added to their squad today, announcing the signing of Scotland Captain Rachel Corsie on a two-and-a-half year deal.
The 32 year-old central defender joins the club from Kansas City Current, becoming our third signing of the January transfer window following the arrivals of Jill Scott and Anna Patten.
