Next up on Villa Watch is coverage of Matty Cash and Jan Bednarek as Poland take on Mexico in Group C. Let’s see how the defensive duo fared…

Like Emiliano Martinez earlier today, Matty Cash started his first ever World Cup game as Poland drew 0-0 with Mexico. Jan Bednarek was named among the substitutes but failed to appear.

The first-half was a feisty affair that was edged by Mexico. Cash put in a solid performance at right-back, emulating a typical display that we see from the 25-year-old each week at Villa Park. The defender often flew down the right, attempting to contribute offensively for his nation and dealt with the threat of the tricky Alexis Vega well at the other end.

The second half started well for Poland as Robert Lewandowski won a penalty in the 55th minute, but the experienced striker failed to convert. Generally, it was a tighter contest but neither side could find a breakthrough. Cash continued to surge forward and put a couple of crosses into the box late on, searching for both Lewandowski and Milik but to no avail. The No.2 worked hard throughout and was solid defensively too – his display was rewarded with a clean sheet.

UP NEXT & PREVIOUS MEETINGS

Up next for Poland is Saudi Arabia in Group C. The two sides meet at the Education City Stadium on Saturday 26th November, and you can watch coverage of the game on ITV with kick-off at 1pm.

The last time these two nations met was a friendly fixture in 2006. Poland edged the contest 2-1 as forward Lukasz Sosin scored either side of Redah Tukar’s 27th minute equaliser. Poland won on all three of the other occasions where these sides have previously met.

This upcoming fixture is the first competitive game between Poland and Saudi Arabia in history – can the Central-European team do what Argentina couldn’t and defeat the Middle Eastern side?
