PLAYER RATINGS | Aston Villa 1-1 Burnley

In the final home game of the season, Aston Villa came from behind to draw 1-1 with relegation-threatened Burnley.

Aston Villa controlled the first half as John McGinn’s efforts were denied by an inspired Nick Pope. Emi Buendia’s eagerness got the better of him in first-half injury time as he lunged into a mistimed challenge on Cornet, Ashley Barnes dispatching the resulting penalty.

The Argentinian redeemed himself early in the second half with a sweeping volley from John McGinn’s delightful ball into the box.

Bertrand Traore was the next victim of a fantastic Nick Pope performance; the goalkeeper reacting well to Traore’s downwards header. Martinez and Mings then combined to deny Burnley all three points, with a great save and a goal scoring block respectively.

Ex-Villa right-back Matt Lowton received a red card in injury time for a challenge on Calum Chambers, but the visitors held on to take the point.

Emi Martinez – 7

Steady game for Argentina’s number one. Got down low to save Brownhill’s effort, and denied Roberts at the front post before Mings produced an outstanding block to shut-out Weghorst!

Rating contribution from Ryan Mckeown

Matty Cash – 7

Another balanced performance from the ‘Supporter’s Player of the Year’.

Done well to deflect McNeil’s strike over the top for a corner before going close with a rasping drive over Pope’s crossbar.

Provided good width in attack throughout.

Rating contribution from Ryan Mckeown

Calum Chambers – 7

Becomes more and more pleasing on the eye with his distribution from defence.

Must of thought he’d bagged an assist with his delivery for Traore’s headed effort, but Pope saved magnificent.

On the end of a rash challenge from Matt Lawton deep into injury time, the ex-Villa defender received a straight red.

Rating contribution from Ryan Mckeown

Tyrone Mings – 7

Clashed with Ashley Barnes early one, the Burnley forward was lucky to escape a VAR review after flinging an elbow.

The Captain’s leg was at full stretch to deny Weghorst what would have been the winning goal. Excellent.

Lucas Digne – 6.5

Another solid performance as the Frenchman continues to grow into this Aston Villa side.

Douglas Luiz – 6.5

Luiz; our versatile central midfielder was back in at number ‘six’, maintained possession with a very calm and composed performance.

Remains to be seen if this was his final appearance at Villa Park?

Rating contribution from Ryan Mckeown

*John McGinn – 7.5

Excellent performance from Super John McGinn, dropping the shoulder, twisting, spinning, full-on McGinn mode.

McGinn had two spectacular long-range efforts matched by Nick Pope in the first-half.

Picked out Emi Buendia’s burst into the box with a delightfully weighted angled ball into the area, earning him an assist.

Rating contribution from Ryan Mckeown

Jacob Ramsey – 6

Returned to the starting line-up and worked tirelessly in the midfield three; as he has done all season.

The “Young and Player’s Player of the Year” received a standing ovation from the Villa Park faithful when he was withdrawn for Coutinho. Excellent season.

Carney Chukwuemeka – 5

Handed a starting berth against Burnley for the first time under Steven Gerrard and it proved to be a difficult evening for the 18-year-old.

Almost pounced onto Cash’s early ball in the area during the opening moments, coming within millimetres of opening the scoring.

At the age of 18 it’s a difficult position to play, especially given how Burnley set up, he’ll improve with more game time. A loan move next season to cut his teeth like others have this season could be the turning point in his fledgling career – if he signs the contract!

Rating contribution from Ryan Mckeown

Emi Buendia – 7

From the first whistle, Buendia injected his infectious energy and tenacious play into the game, unfortunately that eagerness spilt over in first-half injury time; sticking out a leg and clumsily bringing down Cornet. Barnes converting from the spot.

The Argentinian redeemed himself early in the second half with a sweeping volley from John McGinn’s delightful ball into the box.

Rating contribution from Ryan Mckeown

Ollie Watkins – 5.5

Watkins had a effort tipped over by the impressive Pope in the second-half, again, frustratingly, nothing would stick to the frontman, it’s imperative his hold-up play is worked on during preseason.

Substitutions

Bertrand Traore

On for Chukwuemeka, 57th minute – Bertrand Traore was another victim of a fantastic Nick Pope performance; the goalkeeper reacting well to Traore’s downwards header. Another whose performance could be his last at Villa Park.

Philippe Coutinho

On for Ramsey, 71st minute – made an immediate impact in the ‘8’ role, creating opportunities for both Watkins and Ings as Villa searched for a winner.

Danny Ings

On for Watkins, 78 minutes – Ings almost arrived in spectacular style, blazing one wide with his first touch.
