Aston Villa suffered a 0-2 home defeat to Chelsea on Sunday afternoon.
Let’s hear the fans post-match thoughts about the players’ individual performances.
EMI MARTINEZ – 6
Could do nothing as Mingsβ poor header fell straight to Mount for 1-0. Was in control after that and claimed some important through balls on the edge of the area as Raheem Sterling was pushed up top. Drops a mark for moving right and gambling for Mountβs free kick despite setting a wall to cover that very area. A bad error.
– Ivan McDouall
MATTY CASH – 6
Enjoyed more of the ball in attacking areas today, plenty of crosses into the box but as usual of late to no rewards. Beaten by Sterling to a header which is unacceptable. A pretty solid game just let down with silly errors, Big 6 bias with the Chilwell tackle and our misfiring attack.
– Gary Plaza
TYRONE MINGS – 5
A bad day in the office for Tyrone Mings. After a positive and consistent start to the season he gifted Mason Mount the opener, misplacing a headed clearance following a deflected cross. His reaction to the error was superb as Aston Villa dominated the opening 45 minutes.
Into the second half and he gave away the free kick that led to Mount’s second goal; Mount finding the top of the net after Martnez stepped to his wrong side.
Applauded The Holte End at the final whistle and the anguish on the defender’s face was plain to see. He’ll recover and will be ready for Thursday evening.
– Ryan Mckeown
EZRI KONSA – 6
Another good game from Konsa, who is slowly like the old Konsa we know and loved. He didn’t have to do much, but what he did, he did well. Solid.
– Ellis Burnett
ASHLEY YOUNG – 7
Continues to occupy the unlikely position of Villaβs best player week in week out. First half linked well with Watkins on left and gave the side an impetus and progression. Some final balls lacked the precision of old and at half time I did start to wonder if this was a game too far in the renaissance. However, he picked up where he left off in the second half and seemed desperate to make something happen. Assumed the armband once SJM was substituted.
– Ivan McDouall
DOUGLAS LUIZ – 6
Again, a standard Douglas Luiz performance. Luiz broke up the Chelsea attack and tried to link passes together in the middle of the park. It’s not the way he would have wanted to celebrate his new contract, but again a solid enough performance.
– Ellis Burnett
JACOB RAMSEY – 6
Ramsey was denied Villa’s equalizer after a magnificent save from Chelsea’s Kepa. Ramsey’s low drive was the second of a double save following McGinn’s effort.
On the receiving end of an awful challenge from Chelsea’s Ben Chilwell who somehow escaped a dismissal. (If roles were reversed, I’m sure Ramsey would have walked!)
– Ryan Mckeown
JOHN MCGINN – 4
Can Gerrard keep starting McGinn? I have never known a Captain be subbed off so much.
Couple of early tackles set the standard but another poor performance. The only good bit was a great cross for Bailey who unluckily hit the bar with his header.
I think being replaced by Dendonker midweek is needed.
– Gary Plaza
LEON BAILEY – 7
Villaβs most threatening player in the first half and was busy and dangerous. Telling that Cucarella was hauled off after 45 minutes. Drops a mark for the missed chance from McGinnβs cross when he should have scored. Lovely ball into Ings that somehow Kepa clawed over. Gerrard said afterwards he was always going to have 60 minutes max, but Villa looked a poorer proposition once he departed.
– Ivan McDouall
OLLIE WATKINS – 6
If the rating were solely based on his first half, it would be much higher, but his second half let him down. He looked far better in the first half in a slightly wider position, creating chances. The only flaw was that he was bit selfish, which is understandable in a striker lacking confidence. His horrifying shot in the second half resulted in a Chelsea throw-in!
– Ellis Burnett
DANNY INGS – 6
Great first half just needed a goal. If he’d played more minutes recently then I’m sure he would’ve scored today. Kepa brilliantly denied him, but Ings will know he should’ve scored.
Completely disappeared second half. So, nothing to add. What showed today is that we are desperate for a striker.
– Gary Plaza
SUBS
BUENDIA – 5
On for Bailey, 66 minutes – Couldnβt impact the game. Not the first time thatβs been said and wonβt be the last (whether he starts or comes off the bench). Large sections of the fan base seem to regard him as the saviour but this is unfounded to say the least. Donβt shoot the messenger. – Ivan McDouall
COUTINHO – 5
on for McGinn, 73 minutes – No impact. Game was already gone for Villa when introduced. – Ryan Mckeown
DENDONCKER – 5
On for Ramsey, 78 minutes – ran around a bit. – Ryan Mckeown
