PLAYER RATINGS | Aston Villa 0-4 Tottenham Hotspur

share

Author

Aston Villa were ruthlessly dispatched by a clinical Tottenham Hotspur at Villa Park.

Once again an early goal handicapped Aston Villa , Son striking on 3 minutes. Despite this, Villa were the dominant side in the first-half, creating numerous chances – but failed to convert – 0-1 at the interval.

It was a case of déjà vu in the second half – Dejan Kulusevski striking early to kill the game and the crowd. Son then added two more, capitalising on poor defending to complete his hat-trick.

Let’s see how the Villa Fans rated our stars in Claret and Blue.

STARTING LINE-UP

Formation 4-3-1-2

Emi Martinez – 6

Rating contribution from Justin Hawthorne

After picking the ball out of his net after 3 mins he had very little to do in the first half, unfortunately, the second was a different story when the back 4 went AWOL

Left hopelessly exposed.

Matty Cash – 6

Rating contribution from Ivan McDouall

Unlucky that Kane’s shot hit him and rebounded to Son, but responded well and grew into the game.

Produced two good efforts and looks a real threat when pushing up. Too often lacks a forward option in front of him though.

Much quieter in second half as Villa imploded.

Ezri Konsa – 3

Rating contribution from Hannah Gowen

Konsa was all over the place today. Could be seen at fault for all four goals today and didn’t really do anything to redeem himself. What more can I say?

Tyrone Mings – 3

Rating contribution from Gary Plaza

I could easily give Mings an 8 or 9 on the first half performance but as we know it’s a 90 minute game.

The second half performance showed us that we need 2 CBs in the summer as both Mings and Konsa are not good enough to take us to the next level, in my opinion.

Both very good on their day but both atrocious on others, and today was the latter.

We gave Spurs too much space and respect and we were severely punished. Maybe I’m being harsh and a DM would give them better protection but for me the jury is out on both.

Lucas Digne – 4

Rating contribution from Justin Hawthorne

Digne, showed signs of the player we hope he could be in the first half but like the rest of the team he failed to reciprocate his first half showing in the second.

Douglas Luiz – 5

Rating contribution from Justin Hawthorne

I thought he had a very good first half, dictated play and broke up anything Spurs had to throw at us.

But again like so many others in the second half just went missing and threw all that good work in the first away with a non-show in the second.

John McGinn – 4

Rating contribution from Ivan McDouall

Frustrating.

Some of the usual cross-field balls came off, but can look like a risk. Always feel he is lucky to win fouls where he does – just as the opposition is about to pounce.

Dithered outside of the box in the first half before seeming to learn his lesson, improved with a wonderful rising shot which Lloris saved.

Played on the edge at times which was probably what Villa needed but lost all-purpose and momentum in the second half debacle. A promotional and cult hero but is he justifying the guaranteed pick status. I think not.

Jacob Ramsey – 5

Rating contribution from Hannah Gowen

Ramsey had a decent first half, linking up play between the defence and the front 3, and had a good chance himself. Faded with the game.

Danny Ings – 6

Rating contribution from Ivan McDouall

Seemed reluctant to shoot at times but had good anticipation for chances from Coutinho’s free-kick ,and one at the back post.

Where’s the selfish streak we saw at Southampton? Good effort in the second half before being substituted.

Phillipe Coutinho – 6

Rating contribution from Hannah Gowen

A brilliant first half from Coutinho led Villa a goal behind but showed plenty of promise. Had a few great chances and delivered a sublime free-kick dink to Ings but failed to register a goal when Villa was on top.

Subbed as he faded away with the rest of the game.

Ollie Watkins – 4

Rating contribution from Gary Plaza

Another outing and another no show second half for Ollie. Superb effort in the opening 45 pressing throughout but missed a couple of decent chances that came his way.

Second half we may as well of played with 10 men as he wasn’t anywhere to be seen. We have lost 4 in a row and need players to stand up and be counted!

I see a front three of Buendia, Coutinho and Ings against Leicester

SUBSITUTIONS

Emi Buendia – 6

on for Coutinho, 67th minute – must be wondering what more he has to do to get back into this side!

Leon Bailey – 5

on for Ings, 67th minute – Contributed nothing, though game had well and truly gone

Ashley Young – N/A

on for Digne, 79th minute – on for the final 10 in replacement of the injured Digne.

Subs not used: Robin Olsen, Morgan Sanson, Bertrand Traore, Calum Chambers, Marvelous Nakamba, Carney Chukwuemeka.
