Aston Villa’s successful pre season campaign comes to an end as they open their Premier League campaign against newly promoted Bournemouth.

I caught up with @CherriesTalking to hear their thoughts ahead of the new season.

UTVPODCAST X TALKING CHERRIES

For many, Bournemouth’s transfer business this summer has been somewhat underwhelming, how do you feel about how the club has gone about the window?

The window is not closed yet and things are starting to happen. We have more Premier League experience in our squad this time than the last and that seems to be forgotten. Yes we are light in a couple of areas but I am convinced the necessary deals will arrive. It also mustn’t be forgotten that we’ve managed to keep all our players and get many under new contracts. Most recently Dom Solanke yesterday. Far from gloomy.

@CherriesTalking

Bournemouth’s pre-season has been a mixed bag, how confident are you for this season considering the level of opponents Bournemouth faced?

Pre season is not relevant. It’s all about what happens on the big stage. I think there’s a bit of hoowinkery and skullduggery going on to be honest. For the season, we will surprise a few and finish 16th.

@CherriesTalking

Do you believe that Parker can finally keep a team up in the Premier League this season?

Yes I do. We all have had our questions of him strategically and we will continue to do so. Suffice to say if we see a team genuinely trying, we will be right behind them. His tactics will be what may get the better of him from the fans’ perspectives but he moved up in our estimation as the season progressed. Time will tell.

@CherriesTalking

Finally what’s your score prediction for the game?

I believe it will be 1-1.

OPPOSITION FOCUS | SCOTT PARKER

Bournemouth’s manager, Scott Parker, played a significant role in the club’s promotion last season. The player-turned-manager has effectively instilled his values in the club and has them playing football that is strikingly similar to his own. In this article, I’ll look at how Parker has done this and how effective he has been.

I previously stated that Parker has been able to instil a distinct playing style within Bournemouth, but what exactly is that playing style? To answer that question, you must first consider Parker’s playing style. Parker was an emotional player who was known for his tough tackling and leaving it all on the field.

Parker tries to instil that emotion in his teams so that when they lose the ball, they can reclaim it quickly. This worked well in the Championship, where Bournemouth was one of the better teams. In the Premier League against stronger opponents. I’m not convinced.

However, Parker’s man management is among the best in the league. Parker’s time as a Tottenham academy coach is an example of this. Parker, according to Lock (Tottenham Graduate), went up to each player at halftime and explained what he wanted from each of them.

Lock, on the other hand, was adamant that he wanted to leave and be done with football. Parker refused to let this adolescent give up on his dreams and told him to get back in the game. Parker’s players wanted to win for him, according to Lock, because other coaches would have simply kicked them out.

Another example of Parker’s man management can be found in Bournemouth’s promotion to the Premier League. The Cherries were in second place and needed to beat Nottingham Forest, who were close behind. Forest dominated Bournemouth in the first half, and the Southerners were in desperate need of a break. Parker took advantage of the opportunity and delivered an inspiring speech to his team. Kieffer Moore scored the game-winning goal, and Bournemouth earned automatic promotion to the Premier League.

So we’ve seen what Parker is capable of as a manager, but how effective is he? Parker had a win percentage of 35% during his time at Fulham. When you consider Fulham’s position prior to Parker taking over, bottom of the league, it’s important to take that percentage with a pinch of salt because it was against much better competition. Parker’s current win percentage at Bournemouth is much higher, at a whopping 54 percent.

This season is crucial for Parker because he has a good chance of keeping one of his clubs in the Premier League for the first time. Bournemouth and Parker’s story will undoubtedly be an intriguing one to follow this season.
