Aston Villa have announced the departure of Egyptian Mahmoud Trezequet to Trabzonspor for an undisclosed fee.

Trezequet joins Trabzonspor after spending the second-half of last season in Turkey on loan with Istanbul Basaksehir. I’d like to reflect on Trezequet’s time in claret and blue and recall all of the important goals he scored.

Slow Start

Trezequet joined Villa for a reported fee of around Β£9 million in the summer of 2019. Many neutrals saw this as an exciting deal because Trezequet had established a positive reputation.

Trezequet’s debut was marred by a 3-1 loss to Spurs and three weeks later, he was shown a red card in the dying minutes of a contentious game at Selhurst Park.

Carabao Cup Heroics

As the season progressed into winter, Trezequet scored his first Premier League goal, arriving late at the far post in a 2-1 loss to Liverpool – this type of finish would become his trademark. Trezequet snuck in at the far post again in the dying minutes of the second leg of the Carabao Cup semi-final against Leicester, getting on the end of a cross from fellow Egyptian Elmohamady to send Villa Park into a frenzy.

Relegation Saviour

As good as that goal was, Trezequet will be remembered for his role in keeping us in the league in the 2019/20 season. When Villa looked down and out, it was Trezequet (again at the back post) who came to the rescue. In our last four games, the winger scored three goals, including a brace against Crystal Palace and the game-winning goal against Arsenal. These goals played a huge role in Villa’s survival in the Premier League.

Ongoing Injuries

Unfortunately, Trezequet was plagued by injuries in subsequent seasons, and was unable to cement a spot in the starting eleven. Trezequet last appeared for Aston Villa away against Brentford; tarnished by a poor dive in an attempt to win a last-minute penalty. beforeΒ securingΒ a loan deal back to Turkey.

Summary

Trezequet’s time at Villa was not a huge success, but he stepped up for us when Villa needed a hero. 8 goals in 56 appearances isn’t a lot, but the significance of the goals he scored is what will stick with me about Trezequet. As I previously stated, we would not be where we are today without Trezequet’s contribution.
