The 2022/23 Aston Villa home kit has finally arrived after months of concept designs, social media fan frustrations, and ‘leaked’ shirts even becoming available for purchase on eBay.

It is the first kit to be designed by Castore; making its debut in Aston Villa’s U23’s 8-2 away win over Chasetown FC on Friday night, following the conclusion of Kappa’s three-year deal.

The owners’ ambitions to re-brand the club badge was one of the key announcements this preseason. With the prospective re-branding anticipated to coincide with the club’s 150th anniversary, this newest release could be the current designs penultimateΒ outing. Both the Replica and Pro versions of the shirts feature the 3D silicone Villa crest, with the club’s trademark lion below the collar on the reverse.

Key features of the shirt are the crafted chevrons within the fabric, a streamlined V-neck collar, and the continuation of the classic blue sleeves.

Principal partner Cazoo, have revamped their design with the slogan Search.Drive.Smile beneath the Cazoo branding, this is featured across all men’s and women’s shirts, including junior and infant kits.

Let’s see the reaction from the UTVPODCAST community:

A very safe and standard home shirt this season, perhaps not a surprise from Villa. On first glance I wasn’t a fan, found the shirt to be a bit lazy and dull, but upon further inspection I do like the chevron detail and it looks smart. Do wish we did something a bit more interesting, I’d love a collar. I’ll be looking out for the away shirt!

It’s difficult for any home shirt to provide a completely different design every season. For the 2022/23 campaign, Aston Villa have opted for a simplistic design which screams β€œmeh”. It’s fine. For Castore’s first collaboration with the club, it suits its purpose of acting as an official home shirt and that’s it. It’s not a fashion piece nor a unique piece of footballing merchandise, the shirt is a safe move made by all parties. It’s design does not justify its price tag, Β£65 for a regular Adult-sized shirt yet I suppose in terms of the quality of sportswear, Castore are leaders in utilising advanced engineering and technical fabrics for kits. 5/10

The kit is now available, and to be honest, I quite like it. Castore has stuck to the tried-and-true claret body with blue arms, and frankly, you can’t go wrong. The diamond pattern on the material is a nice touch, and the badge is the same as last year. The sponsor has added a tagline beneath the Cazoo motif, which has divided the fan base, but I don’t mind. I’ve ordered mine and am hoping for better sizing than Kappa, so we’ll see. As a kit hoarder myself, I give it a big thumbs up!

Definitely an improvement on the leaked kits with the detailing adding an extra dimension. me and my son Arlo love the β€˜V’ shape / chevron, which is certainly a better look than last season’s lines. Interestingly, Arlo likes the ‘Search.Drive.Smile’ under the Cazoo and it’s growing on me (although reminds me of the symbols under 32 Red on an old Nike kit). Ultimately it’s a simple home shirt that works and gives prominence to the badge. Shout out to the launch video which was striking and also the home GK shirt which looks fresh and contrasts well with the outfield equivalents. Price wise I’ll wait to get Arlo’s as usuals, as it drops in price – unless he saves up himself, and I don’t tend to buy the shirt anymore. Unfortunately it looks largely in line with Premier League prices (bar Wolves blah blah!)

This year’s Castore kit is available online now and in-store at Villa Park from 8am on Saturday, July 9.
