PLAYER FOCUS | TYRONE MINGS

Tyrone Mings’ name has been a source of debate among Villa fans in recent seasons. Following aΒ crucially important chapter in the Mings X Aston Villa story line, I examine how important Mings is to this football club.

THE STORY SO FAR …

Let us begin at the beginning of the story. He joined Aston Villa on loan from Premier League Bournemouth at the age of 26. Nobody expected much from him, nor did they realise how significant he would become.

With Mings in the line-up, Villa went on a record-breaking ten-match winning streak. This streak catapulted them into the playoffs and resulted in a successful promotion. Mings’ loan deal was made permanent for Β£26 million in the Summer of 2019.

During that season, Mings contributed to a vastly stronger defence following Project Restart, which led to Premier League survival.

Following Jack Grealish’s departure, the next pivotal moment in the Mings X Aston Villa relationship came. Mings was tasked with filling the vacant Captain position. He eagerly accepted and did an outstanding job representing the club while also becoming a full England International.

ON THE PITCH

Mings’ influence on the squad, however, is perhaps most obvious when he isn’t around. Aston Villa lack a clear leader without Mings on the field, and the defence frequently appears frantic.

For example, with Mings on the field, our win percentage is 35.2%, but it drops to 10% without him. Villa also concedes 1.4 goals on average while Mings is on the field. This figure jumps to two each game when he is not in leadership of the defence.

OFF THE PITCH

Mings’ effect on the field isn’t the only reason he’s such a fantastic club representative. Mings has consistently supported key subjects about which he is enthusiastic, such as attending anti-racismΒ marches, and mental health issues.

In addition, Tyrone’s charitable activity is outstanding, recently collaborating with Nathan Dawe to raise donations for the Ghana Lions to provide a higher education to individuals who do not have access to it.

CONCLUSION

I understand that Mings can make mistakes. However, it is indisputable that Aston Villa are far superior when Tyrone Mings is present. Mings has also continuously represented Villa in an amazing manner. Overall, I’m delighted we have Mings as a Villa player, and I hope he can continue to improve after a strong showing against Everton.
