PLAYER RATINGS | ASTON VILLA 1-1 MANCHESTER CITY

The 2022 season has been one to forget so far, with plenty of lows to try and get over. The loss to Arsenal on Wednesday was the 4th in 5 games and left Steven Gerrard looking over his shoulder.

The impending home game to the Champions looked a very daunting task indeed. However, just when you think all hope is lost football has a habit of picking you up when you least expect it.

A great battling performance and a superb point will hopefully be a springboard to a turnaround!!

Let’s hear Justins post-match thoughts about the players’ individual performances.

EMI MARTINEZ – 8

“A welcome return to his best form just at the right time for the big stopper, he wasn’t called upon to make loads of stops, but what he did do well was command his area. He patrolled the edge of his box supremely well in the first half coming for everything and in the second half he came into his own at 1-1 marshalling his troops; he is the natural on field captain”.

MATTY CASH – 5

“Started the game brightly but unfortunately for the Polish right-back he took a knock and had to come off after 26 mins to be replaced by Ashley Young”.

TYRONE MINGS – 8

Mings

“I have to say that after all stuff that’s been written and said about the former skipper you would forgive him for not being able to replicate anything like his top form for us. However, in the last two games, he’s been very good. against City, he had probably his biggest challenge yet in the simply awesome Erling Haaland, but if anything it bought the best out of Mings. Whilst he couldn’t stop him scoring I do feel Tyrone had the moral victory”.

EZRI KONSA – 8

“Once again Konsa got the nod to partner Mings in the continued absence of Carlos. and he should be proud of his days’ work. marshalled the back line and showed that he still has a big future ahead of him if he can keep performing consistently. some key blocks and interceptions helped keep the city strikeforce relatively quiet”.

LUCAS DIGNE – 8

“After tipping to be one of the players to watch out for this season he’s not started as well as he or the fans would have hoped. but against City, he showed just what he’s capable of, got forward when he could and defended well”.

BOUBARCAR KAMARA – 8

Kamara

“The young Frenchman has taken to the premier league and against one of the best midfielders in world football he didn’t look out of place at all, linking the play and winning the ball back”.

JACOB RAMSEY – 7

“Asked to play in the more advanced attacking midfield role I think suited his game more, whilst he is still trying to recapture his best form in a villa shirt this runout will have done his confidence the world of good”.

JOHN MCGINN – 6

“Unfortunately for the fiery Scot he just can’t seem to get going at the moment, there is no lack of desire in his play it’s just his form that’s letting him down at the minute, I fear he may need taking out of the firing line soon”.

DOUGLAS LUIZ – 8

“After Arsenal’s failed attempt to sign him and his apparent annoyance you would have forgiven him for not being “all in” against City, but once again he was very good”.

OLLIE WATKINS – 8

“A willing runner all game, he led the line well. His hold-up play has also improved. Did well to set JJ up for a chance in the second half”.

LEON BAILEY – 8

“Well let us all hope Bailey turns up like this every week, grew into the game and was an increasing threat throughout. took his goal with aplomb”.

SUBS

*YOUNG – 9

On for Cash 26th minute.

“I feared the worst when Cash pulled up lame so early and looking at the bench with 37-year-old Young getting stripped to come on, against one of the most feared attacking units in the world I thought oh no! Quite frankly I shouldn’t have, Ashley Young was sensational, and I questioned the merits of signing a 37-year-old in the summer for another year but I shouldn’t have worried as he’s ace !!! fit as a flea and experience in spades. Hope we keep him forever! Villa legend for sure!

COUTINHO – 7

On for Mcginn 65th minute.

“Was incredibly unlucky not to take the roof off the Holte end when his goal was wrongly ruled out for off side”.

BUENDIA – N/A

On for Bailey 9st minute

“Allowed Bailey to get a deserved standing ovation”.

  1. Firstly, excellent comments, and I agree totally on your scoring too. Yes, it was an excellent game from Villa’s players, who for the first time this season appeared up for the task against possibly the best team in the league by a country mile. But what was pleasing was we matched them throughout, and in some cases made them realise that we might be down presently, but it don’t last forever, and this excellent performance against what is a top team, will hopefully generate much better football, solid performances from all our players, and yes Aston Villa start winning games again.
It felt so good seeing our players giving 100% throughout, and finally, Villa got a much deserved draw on the night, but due to yet another oddball mistake by officials, it should have been a win, has Coutinho’s wonder goal was a peach, and yes, he WAS onside, so the blame has to be down to the referee, who simply blew way to early for Villa fans liking. But all in all we deserved what we got, but on another occasion, we might get the rub of the green?
Thank You Justine for your wonderful work alongside Luke on UTV PODCAST, which gives us Villa fans so much entertainment, and the content is way out there in front of the rest.
