PLAYER RATINGS | Aston Villa 2-1 Leicester City

Aston Villa came from behind to beat Leicester City under the lights at Villa Park.

Ezri Konsa bagged a brace; one in each half, following Harvey Barnes giving the visitors an early lead.

Let’s see how the fans rated our boys in Claret and Blue!

STARTING LINE-UP

Formation 4-3-3

Emi Martinez – 8

Another impressive display from the 6th best goalkeeper in world football with his standout moment being a save worthy of the best in world football from a Harvey Barnes headed effort.

For me, his kicking wasn’t the best today however we looked much better playing out from the back. A solid all-around game from Martinez. Ellis Burnett

Matty Cash – 8

Solid performance from Cash tonight but it didn’t look like it’d be that way to start with. He gave Barnes too much time on too many occasions.

The second half was so much better, he closed Barnes now instantly every time and didn’t allow him room. Superb clearances and blocks throughout.

I bet he’s still fuming Ollie decided to shoot and not pass when he was through on goal but we won and are up to 10th so no need to make it a big issue out of it. Gary Plaza

Ezri Konsa – 9

maybe harsh not to receive a 10/10, as the number four looked phenomenal in the heart of defence alongside his partner in crime, Tyrone Mings.

The former Brentford man scored both of the goals, showing his ‘in the box instincts’ to capitalise on a poor aerial Leicester defence. A national call-up is surely on the horizon for the game-winner. Liam Davies

Tyrone Mings – 8

Yet another colossal performance from the Captain, won everything in the air and looks far more composed and calm when he has the ball at his feet, seems to have benefitted from the manager change. Justin Hawthorne

Ashley Young – 6

It wasn’t Young’s best game today but it definitely wasn’t his worst. I think particularly in the first half he struggled against the tricky feet of Lookman and Castagne although as the game progressed he looked more and more comfortable.

He made some very intelligent fouls in order to halt Leicester’s momentum and did a good job filling in for Targett. Ellis Burnett

Marvelous Nakamba – 9

What a player Nakamba is fast becoming. I lost count of how many interceptions and tackles he made.

He has gone from Djemba Djemba to Prime Makélélé in a few games. There were always signs of a decent player but with confidence, he is becoming an integral part of our set-up.

Superb from start to finish. He helps the team by winning the ball in great areas before playing it to a teammate to start the next press.

Was in the right place at the right time when a Mings clearance was blocked putting Leicester through in on goal only for Marvelous to clear the danger. Gary Plaza

John McGinn – 8

A real contender for Man Of The Match from the Scotsman who has been consistently excellent since Gerrard’s arrival.

A series of perfect passes to set players up for counterattacks and important tackles to halt Leicester’s. Once again, super from Super John McGinn. Ellis Burnett

Douglas Luiz – 7

The Brazilian continued his fine form from midweek and looks just as assured in the more advanced midfield position he finds himself in under Gerrard.

Despite being subbed in the 77th for Morgan Sanson, Luiz can hold his head high once again with a performance consisting of composure and the odd bit of flair. Superb from the number six. Liam Davies

Emi Buendia – 7.5

I’ve been impressed with his work off the ball. With his goals and assists for Norwich last season, some fans may have expected more but he currently creates a chance every 44 minutes and that’s with him still settling into a new system.

Great pressing throughout the 75 minutes he played, showed plenty of skill and neat interchanging. Still got the best to come from this guy! Gary Plaza

Jacob Ramsey – 8

Ramsey returned to the starting 11 after missing out against City in the week and showed no signs of his standards dropping. Continues to put performances in that belie his age and experience. Ridiculous call to disallow what would have been his first goal at Villa Park, but I’m sure we see plenty more from him in the years ahead. Justin Hawthorne

Ollie Watkins – 7

On another day Watkins could have had a brace with the chances he had today, but the positive to take is that he is getting into these positions.

His hold up play was particularly impressive for me and I thought he has shown the work rate in the last two games that we came to expect from him last season. Although he was unlucky today, it was far from a performance to be ashamed of. Ellis Burnett

Substitutions

Morgan Sanson (on for Luiz, 76th minute) 6

More minutes for the Frenchman as he continues to build towards full fitness. Ryan Mckeown

Carney Chukwuemeka (on for Buendia, 76th minute) 6

The 18-year-old was again trusted to come on in a high-pressure game, a huge show of faith from the gaffer! Ryan Mckeown

Axel Tuanzebe (on for Ramsey, 84th minute) 5

Came on and played alongside Mings and Konsa as we switched to a back three for the final minutes. Ryan Mckeown

Subs not used: Jed Steer, El Ghazi, Hause, Davis, Philogene-Bidace, Ireogbunam
