Despite taking the lead twice, Aston Villa were defeated 2-4 by Leicester City on Saturday afternoon at Villa Park.
Let’s hear the fans post-match thoughts about the players’ individual performances.
EMILIANO MARTINEZ – 5
“The mistakes were in front of him today, but the World Cup winner will be sorely disappointed at being rounded 3 times for 3 goals. Little he could do with Iheanachoβs close range header. Obviously, his pass to Kamara led to the initial Leicester equaliser but interesting comments after the game that this will continue as a style of play. Perhaps nitpicking but in a game like this can a goalkeeping captain rouse the troops in the same way as an outfield player?”
– Ivan McDouall
ASHLEY YOUNG – 5
“An average performance compared to the standard he has set this season. Didn’t really recover from the knock he sustained following a heavy challenge from Harvey Barnes. Withdrawn for Cash early in the second half”
– Ryan Mckeown
TYRONE MINGS – 5
“Uncomfortable throughout as the midfield lost the ball and Leicesterβs front players bore down on him at speed. After such a solid few games Mings failed to Marshall those around him as – like against Liverpool on Boxing Day – the high line offered little protection against Leicesterβs counter-attack. Perhaps felt like a victim of circumstance rather than prime culprit for the defeat”
– Ivan McDouall
EZRI KONSA – 5.5
“Part of a collectively poor and uncomfortable defence. Lost possession four times playing out from the back; gifting Tielemans possession on one occasion for him to slip in Iheanacho who should scored his second goal.”
– Ryan Mckeown
LUCAS DIGNE – 4
“Lucas Digne reclaimed his starting position in the only change from the Southampton win; it lasted 45 minutes! He struggled to contain Leicester’s debutant Tete and was found ball watching for the second equaliser. Digne lost 2/2 of his ground duals and finished a miserable half with 81% pass completion”.

DOUGLAS LUIZ – 6
“Provided a fluid transition from defence to attack, especially in the first 35 minutes when Villa were on top. Unlucky not to get assist as Buendia glanced on his whipped in corner; only for Emi’s effort to crash off the crossbar. “
– Ryan Mckeown
BOUBACAR KAMARA – 5
“It seems churlish to criticise a player who has been so impressive of late. But this was a real stinker. Once he gave up the ball for Leicesterβs first goal couldnβt seem to move past it and struggled throughout. There was a clear tactic from Leicester to press him and it worked. Shows his value to Villa in terms of his lack of individual performance and the impact that had on the team.”
– Ivan McDouall
JACOB RAMSEY – 5
“Hooked at the break after a relatively quiet first-half in which he struggled to compose this game in. Will have much better days in Claret and Blue.”
– Ryan Mckeown
*EMILIANO BUENDIA – 7
“Relatively speaking given the team showing Buendia was Villaβs man of the match. Hit the woodwork twice and was a constant menace as he tried to work between the lines. It wonβt be the headlines here, but Villa played some lively stuff at times and Buendia was at the heart of that.”

LEON BAILEY – 5
“The Bailey I enjoy watching was present for the opening 35 minutes, direct, pacey, threating – after that, faded badly! Struggled against Kristiansen; losing nine of his ten ground duals, as well as losing possession on twenty-three occasions. Should have ripped the back of the net and made it 3-3 following Emi Buendia’s powerful run and cut-back, but Bailey couldn’t sort his feet out and prodded woefully at goal! “
– Ryan Mckeown
OLLIE WATKINS – 6
“Lovely finish from Buendiaβs shot that rebounded off the woodwork and similarly strong when forcing the second of 8 ft tall Soutter. Unfortunately, as we have come to expect this was accompanied by some glaring misses – not least when he dithered in Coutinhoβs exceptional through ball. Value to team remains clear and given the lack of alternatives, same again next week.“
– Ivan McDouall

Agree with ratings. Leicester targeted Kamara and he struggled to cope with the close attention, in fact the whole defence looked lost without their smooth operator as an outlet. We are still vulnerable to the quick counter.
Yep. Bad day. All part of the learning process under Emery.
