PLAYER RATINGS | Burnley 1-3 Aston Villa

Author

Aston Villa claimed their second win in consecutive games with a dominant away performance against Burnley at Turf Moor.

Emiliano Buendía sparkled on his return to the starting line-up, assisting Danny Ings for the opener before finishing off a well worked move to take a 0-2 lead into half-time.

Ollie Watkins converted John McGinn’s fizzed-in cross to achieve double figures in consecutive Premier League campaigns, before Burnley substitute Maxwel Cornet scored a injury-time consolation goal to deny Villa a third consecutive clean sheet.

Let’s see how the fans scored the player’s performance.

STARTING LINE-UP

Formation 4-3-1-2

Emi Martinez – 8

Rating contribution from Ivan McDouall

Martinez had a busy first half in a sense although was behind everything and never looked rattled.

Great s**thousery wound up Turf Moor a treat. Love him! Says a lot that he was clearly very frustrated by the late goal and lack of clean sheet. These are the standards we need!

Matty Cash – 8

Rating contribution from Liam Davies

Another solid display at the back from Villa’s high-flying right back, as the No.2 looks set to finish a fantastic season in claret and blue in good form.

With Calum Chambers at the ‘6’, both Cash and his fellow full-back Digne were able to bomb down the flanks; an opportunity that the ‘Polish Cafu’ utilised time and time again throughout the 90 minutes, and was, therefore, able to create chances for his offensive teammates.

Cash is up for Aston Villa’s ‘player of the season’ accolade and this performance is another that has certainly contributed positively to his chances of winning. Well in Cashy!

Ezri Konsa – 8

Rating contribution from Liam Davies

A somewhat disappointing day for Aston Villa’s No.4, in what has been a reasonably below-par season overall, especially for his standards.

Konsa has been recognised as one of Villa’s most consistent performers over the years, and was often described as a ‘Rolls Royce’ in the back-line during last season’s excellent defensive triumphs, and was a major part in each clean-sheet earned.

However, Konsa appears to have struggled this time around, and this Burnley fixture was no different – a couple of mistakes and sloppy play (particularly for the Burnley goal) under-shadowed the good in Ezri’s display. Onto next season for the 24-year-old, who will be determined to get back to his best.

Tyrone Mings – 7

Rating contribution from Ivan McDouall

Oh, Tyrone. Enigmatic as ever. One moment towering headers then misplaced passes. He remains a commanding and important presence in this Villa side. A superb sliding challenge to (as it looked at the time) maintain the clean sheet but couldn’t get near Cornet as Villa conceded late on. Fascinating to see his ‘place’ next season

Lucas Digne – 8

Rating contribution from Ryan Mckeown

Excellent performance from the French International, who produced a very balanced display at full-back.

Supported Watkins and McGinn well all afternoon; highlighted by a superb passage of play with Ollie Watkins for Digne to find Buendia in the area who struck home Villa’s second.

Calum Chambers – 7

Rating contribution from Ryan Mckeown

Gerrard utilised Chambers’ versatility by starting him in the ‘number 6’ position.

Adjusted to the pace of game after a slow start and remained disciplined throughout.

John McGinn – 8

Rating contribution from IvanMcDouall

From the first minute seemed the sort of game he thrives in. On the ball a lot and Chambers’ presence allowed him to drive forward. Assist for Ollie’s goal. I’ve been critical of him recently but with the right set up allowing him to play to his many strengths this was a timely reminder of his value to Villa. Gerrard’s man, me thinks

Douglas Luiz – 8

Rating contribution from Liam Davies

A superb outing for the Brazilian No.6 on Saturday afternoon, in a performance that was full of intricate interplay and tireless box-to-box work too.

Luiz enjoyed linking with the playmaker (10) of the side, whether that was Emiliano Buendia or Philippe Coutinho, and was often the link between midfield and attack throughout the game. That South-American link-up can be a joy to watch at times.

He seems to thrive in the ‘8’ role, and with the possibility of a defensive-midfielder signing to come in the summer, could we see the 23-year-old moved further up the field on a more consistent basis next season?

*Emi Buendia – 9

Rating contribution from Liam Davies

A man of the match display from Aston Villa’s record signing at Turf Moor. The travelling Villa faithful sang his name constantly throughout the 90 minutes and with good reason, as the little Argentine produced yet another creative masterclass.

The No.10’s technical work and composure on the ball is what has made him a fan favourite at the club during his first season, and Burnley were Buendia’s most recent victims in what was another magical showing.

A well-timed through pass for Ings’ opener accompanied by a well-taken deflected effort minutes later, capped off a mesmerising first 45 minutes. Buendia was excellent in the second too and would have impressed his manager on his return to the starting eleven. ‘A gift from heaven’.

Danny Ings – 8

Rating contribution from Ryan Mckeown

On our Match Preview, we spoke to ex-Burnley player Stephen Ward who stated Danny Ings was the best striker he’d played and trained with, and Ings backed up those claims with another fine performance.

It was a trademark Ings finish, cooly slotting home after a sublime through ball from Emi Buendia.

Ings’ season goal contributions are beginning to stack up, and it’s now 7 contributions in his last 7 games; it’s a very encouraging end to a start/stop season.

Ollie Watkins – 8

Rating contribution from Ivan McDouall

Took his goal well and is back feeling confident and wanted in the side. Works so hard off the ball and again another player that has a key role moving forward (at least in my opinion).

The fact he and Ings have 2-in-2 bodes well. Shouldn’t be sniffed at that he’s got 10 goals in two consecutive PL seasons.

SUBSITUTIONS

(on for Chambers – 68 minutes) – first appearance since Newcastle away, and did well on central midfield.

Philippe Coutinho – N/A

(on for Buendia – 79 minutes) – with Liverpool up next, Coutinho will be desperate to regain his starting berth.
