Simon Lines (SL) joins UTV podcast team members Luke Robinson (LR), Justin Hawthorne (JH) and Ryan Mckeown (RM) on player rating duty. A frustrating night for Aston Villa as we fail to break down a spirited 10-man Sheffield United.

If you’d like to join us for the next game drop us a comment.

Aston Villa Formation 4-1-2-3

Emi Martinez – 6

Quiet night. All he had to do was pick the ball out of the net. Sheff Utd barely tested him. (SL)

Ahmed Elmohamady – 5

Another who came back down to Earth with a bump, had plenty of chances to deliver balls into the box second half and failed. Approaching the end of his time at the club now, but can be proud of his career. (JH)

Ezri Konsa – 7*

Probably Villa’s most classy player all night. Comfortable performance. (SL)

Tyrone Mings – 6.5

Never really troubled throughout the game, again you could hear his booming voice trying to rally the troops! Like so many in the Villa side, sloppy in possession and took the easy route of launching the ball upfield. (RM)

Matt Targett – 6

Isolated out wide which allowed the cross-shot to come into the box for the opener, otherwise defensively solid throughout. Brilliant cross for Watkins who rattled the bar with a glancing header. Heavily involved when Sheffield United were reduced to 10 men, but like his team-mates – poor deliveries into the box let his game down! (LR)

John McGinn – 6

Had a good chance to put Villa in the lead early on but struggled to create throughout the night. (SL)

Marvelous Nakamba – 6

After a great display against Leeds, he couldn’t repeat it against the bottom side, will be disappointed with his night work, too sloppy in possession and didn’t move the ball quickly enough. (JH)

Jacob Ramsey – 6

Tidy on the ball but ineffective going forward supporting Watkins. Second half was more of the same! Pleasure on the eye when in possession. (LR)

Anwar El Ghazi – 6

Tried his best to create in the first half but kept hitting brick walls, final ball and set-piece delivery was very poor. Can no one beat the first man? (JH)

Bertrand Traore – 6

Tried to make things happen. Great feet and was inches away from scoring what would have been a great goal. (SL)

Ollie Watkins – 6

Must have been thinking he’d grabbed an assist when he found McGinn free in the area, only for the Scottish International to scuff his effort wide. A rare quality ball into the box found Watkins’, but his glancing header rattled the crossbar. (RM)

Substitutions:

Barkley on for Nakamba (68th minute)

Sanson on for Ramsey (68th minute)

Davis on for Traore (81st minute)

Subs not used:

Heaton, Kesler, Taylor, Trezeguet, Engels, Luiz.
