STATISTICAL ANAYLSIS | TYRONE MINGS: THE INTERCEPTOR

Aston Villa put the prospect of European qualification in their own hands with a massive point against Liverpool at Anfield on Saturday afternoon.

Jacob Ramsay opened the scoring in a dominant first-half performance from Aston Villa, after Ollie Watkins passed-up the opportunity for the opener; firing wide from the penalty spot.

Liverpool rallied in the second-half in an attempt to prolong their hopes of Champions League qualification; Roberto Firmino equalising on his final appearance at Anfield in the colours of red.

Aston Villa withstood the pressure to earn a vital point, 1-1. One man who empathised the fighting spirit was Tyrone Mings…

INTER*CEPT*OR
Noun: a person or thing that intercepts.

Tyrone Mings: The Interceptor. It was a colossal performance from Mings in the heart of Aston Villa’s defence, a man-mountain performance; immense throughout. Let’s take a look at his performance – rated 9/10 in our Plater Ratings feature.

With Aston Villa under pressure and balls being fired into the area from all different directions, Mings dealt with them! One area of his game that has improved under Emery is his reading of the game; it is this attribute that enabled Mings to make 5 defensive interceptions, more than any other player.

His defensive statistics were not restricted to interceptions. Mings had seven more clearances than any other Villa player (twelve in total), with Lucas Digne coming in second-place with five. Mings also made two blocks only bettered by his defensive partner Konsa who recorded four; he also made four ball-recoveries; and he ensured he wasn’t dribbled past either, a 100% tackle success rate on attempted dribbles.

Mings made two tackles, one of which prompted a VAR review for a possible red card; Mings correctly survived the call but was given a yellow card for the challenge. My opinion, he won the ball despite the fact that it was high, and his foot action was away from the player. Correct decision.

In possession, it was a very different philosophy from Aston Villa to what we have come to expect; Mings usually dictating the build-up from the back.

Villa opted for direct counter-attacking football (targeting the space down Liverpool’s right-side vacated by TAA moving into midfield); this was highlighted by Mings’ passing stats, attempting only 20 passes (compared to an average of 50 per game this season), four of which were long balls.

To summarise, it was another immense performance from Tyrone Mings, who continues to arguably enjoy his best season in the Premier League. I’d be highly surprised if he’s not involved in the England first-team this summer; well, knowing Southgate, I wouldn’t, but he fully deserves an international recall.

  1. Excellent read once again Ryan, and have to say the usual ‘many good points’ raised with regard to Villa’s attack formation, and who’s doing what. Yes all bodes well for next season hopefully? Long may this new found form under UE continue, along with this playing out from the back, yes it sometimes worries us fans, but the players seem happy with it and Emery looks happy enough conducting play has it goes throughout the game, so yes, whats not to like eh?….But have to say, what excites me no end when seeing great comments being made regarding Tyron Mings, who the majority of fans can see has done superly well under UE, in fact has been immense this season, and I even thought he was a quality player before UE came in, but obviously many weren’t flavour of the month under our last so called gaffer ! But in came a real experienced man, and Emery’s arrival couldn’t happen quick enough, plus he’s bought in his own men to get the very best out of every Villa player, but have to say Tyrone, took many knocks and insults through social media, usually after every single game he played, none warranted of course, but he didn’t let these idiotic so called fans effect his overall game, and he alonside Konsa took all what Unai Emery wanted to teach them, and look at the difference in both players ! In fact ALL of Villa’s players have raised there game 10 fold, and are playing that well now, the difference is certainly showing when it comes to form and results ! And talking about both our defenders, brings me to this, Can it now be said say is that Villa have Englands best pair of defenders at the club right now? I’d say so, for definate, along with many more Villa admirers in fact. Their form has been superb, and they make a great ( yet solid) partnership in defence. and its not just a few games I’m talking about, its throughout a good portion of this past season, well ever since ‘Emery The Magician’ came along ! Both players should be chosen to represent the England team, this time around ( why Mings was ignored I’ll never know, he’s never done wrong in a England shirt up until now !) But of course we all know only to well who names the team, and if they aren’t on his favourites list, or play for Villa maybe? It’s going to be take one mighty task to see one let alone both being picked for England this week? Yes, both certainly deserve to be called up…Lets hope public opinion changes Southgates mind then eh? Oh! and on that note, should Watkins be picked too, surely he deserve another chance? Well I’ll leave that one with you Ryan?….One things certain though, Tyrone & Ezri represents a good part of the foundations of Villa’s defence as things stand, and while both remain strong at the back , and both with that “Though shall not pass attitude” I CAN see both being picked in Villa’s defence come pre-season at least, and if they continue to impress come next season once again, its going to take some defender to take the place of either of these two if this form they are in continues? Yes, the new season will be with us in no time,
and I guess on that subject there will be a fair few more names being floated around about Villa & the potential signings that might, might not, our way? Everythings up in the air right now, but one things certain, the only guy who knows something is the gaffer, and our owners who will give him the money to hopefully get some quality players signing on at the Villa come the transfer window? Yes, the future of Aston Villa certainly looks one hell of a lot brighter since UE arrived, and it appears they are going overboard with Unai Emery ? Plus having the owners we have, can only be good for the club, after all don’t they want exactly the same has each & everyone of us Villa fans want ? Things will chance, but we have our entire trust in them and our management to get us to the promised land ( A top 6 finish or 4 would be better, and for Villa to do very well in Europe just for starters! ) Surely things can get better still in the future under Emery? I’d like to think so, the mans had success, plenty of it compared to some, and can he re-kindle that at AVFC, why not, I’m sure the owners will back him every step of the way, if he continues to bring success Villa’s way? Yes, the fans are happy for a change, and regarding our fans, I just want to say the support we’ve had of late have been fantastic, home and away so far this season ( well since Emery came in to get it right !) improvement is clear to see in approx half a season ! So needless to say those same fans will continue to believe in him here playing in the Premier League, and Europe too. In fact every single supporter of our great club have done themselves proud, with there singing, chanting, and getting right behind the Villa team home and away this season. Credit to each and everyone of them I say. You know we must have possibly the best fans and support in the league by a country mile surely? Well, maybe, maybe not, but one things certain, they’ll take a bit of beating on their day and if the Villa are in town, there’s plenty of them to be heard ! They are just like our first team players when I come to think about it !! They, like our fans, all full with confidence these days following the mighty Aston Villa’s transfermation where ever they may play, and for the first season in many a year, things are far better right now, and I have a feeling this is just the start ! Even the knockers of anyone at Villa have gone into hiding, hopefully never to be seen again if you ask me ! This season finally Villa got back on track, it wasn’t easy, but Emery turned it around with the help of each and every player in our first team squad, and yes, we’ve all witnessed some great performances by one and all from Emery on the touchline strutting his stuff to each and every player on the pitch during the games we’ve been playing, and not to much in disappointments really since Emery’s arrival, plenty to be admired though ! I just hope and pray Aston Villa F.C. now goes on to bigger & better things starting again next season, I could be right in saying Unai Emery loves the club, plus he has faith in all his players too. Plus one thing that does stand out to me is he never forgets to mention the fans, and talks about what we mean to the club and players, and from our point, that will continue in every game we take part in, starting again at Villa Park come the weekend against Brighton, this IS the game of all games, we need this….So lets hope Emery’s plan is foolproof, and we get take the advantage over BHA and get our just deserts then. One things for certain, Villa Park will be rocking, the noise louder than ever, and I expect it’ll cover the entire game, and with a WIN afters too will be called for ! 7th position is ours hopefully, its all to play for Villa, so go take your rewards ! So onto the transfer window, wh’s coming in, who leaves, and how many? All questions that none of us know just yet, well except those few at the Mighty Aston Villa maybe? Yet all we want to see from come into AVFC are a decent scattering of quality proven additions who can enhance what we already have at the club, and in one word, make us stronger where we need that to be? Plus we need strength in depth, and if Emery wants to double up on each position, then he must do so, it all goes to make us a stronger outfit doesn’t it? Playing in European beforehand would be valuable too, when it comes to potential signings, everything that will benefit the Villa when we start our European football trail hopefully? Lets just hope we do well in the league in 23/24, and take that same league form into Europe with us, be great if that was the case, because I have a feeling Emery’s only just started with our first team, and there’s plenty more to follow ? So lets back Emery to get us to the top, I have a good feeling about him, and yes, feel he’s definatley the man to take the club forward again? We deserve some good to come out of this season, we’ve done really well considering the start we had, and looking at a relegation batte at one time, still thats all done with, never again, we’ll stick with Unai Emery shall we ? Long may this form we’ve had continue starting from the off next season? But first things first, not forgetting this weekend against Brighton, we need that game, we need a good result, a winning one would do nicely ! Every Villa player must deliver their best for one more time this season, then you well deserved a nice long breakaway can start then, but not until !! And on that point, its not easy, but hopefully we can come again, and pick Brighton off, like we did against Liverpool, but take our chances when they arrive and get the goals needed to get us to 7th in the league, and of course into Europe….We must Believe in Emery, back him all the way……Mings gets it, Luiz gets it, and JJ gets it if fact the whole Villa team are growing with a new confiedence and getting it. Emery is our saviour, we CAN believe in him, and if anyone can do it, Emery can ! UTV.
