PLAYER RATINGS | ASTON VILLA 2-1 TOTTENHAM HOTSPUR

Aston Villa’s European dream was kept alive thanks to goals from Jacob Ramsey and Douglas Luiz, who secured a 2-1 win against Tottenham Hotspur at Villa Park.

Let’s hear the fans’ post-match thoughts about the players’ individual performances.

EMILIANO MARTÍNEZ – 9

Simply huge for Villa time and time again, and no more so than today. Admittedly didn’t have a shot to face until into the 53rd minute but when called upon he was exemplary. Had simply no right to save from Kane after Luiz had given the ball away in front of him. But he did. Going to be a huge presence in the next two. Should have had a clean sheet.

– Ivan McDouall

ASHLEY YOUNG – 8

Ashley Young continues to party likes it’s 2009 with his impressive performances in claret and blue. Whilst Ash the Younger had us all on the edge of our seats, Ash the Elder has us reclined with an ice-cold beverage in hand safe in the knowledge that everything is absolutely under control. Many a superstar has struggled to better Young this season and on Saturday it was Son Heung-min who was kept quiet. Son could not pose a threat from his near-constant offside position as Young and his fellow defenders held an impeccable line.

– Joey Millington

TYRONE MINGS – 9

Immense performance once again from the off – Richarlison could have been under no doubt that he was going to have a tough afternoon. Marshalled the – high – offside line throughout to superbly efficient effect. Clearly revelling in leading this team and putting Emery’s ideas and style into reality on the grass

– Ivan McDouall

EZRI KONSA – 8

Solid performance from Konsa and the rest of our backline. We continued to play a high line to perfection catching Spurs out multiple times in each half.

Considering we played against Kane, Son and Co we dealt with them without issue.

Konsa and Mings are the reason £30m Carlos can’t get minutes at the moment.

– Gary Plaza

ÁLEX MORENO – 7.5

The cavaliering Catalonian has become a hit in England’s second city since his January move and produced the goods again on Saturday. Moreno is blessed with unrivalled fitness levels and an eye for a killer pass. Showed attack is the best form of defence as he kept the dangerous Pedro Porro pinned back for much of the game.

– Joey Millington

DOUGLAS LUIZ – 9

Luiz will be a leading contender for the top gongs at the club’s end of season dinner and showed just why with yet another outstanding display against Spurs. Capped off a dominant display with a delightful free kick to reach 10 goals and assists in a season for the first time in his career. Made one glaring error but Kane couldn’t capitalise.

Joey Millington

JACOB RAMSAY – 8

A few weeks ago Ramsey acknowledged that goals and assists were needed to be added to improve his all round game. Right place, right time for his goal, meeting Bailey’s cross at the perfect moment.

Multiple breaks forward where he continued to worry the Spurs defence all afternoon. It cannot be long before he is in the national team set up.

– Gary Plaza

JOHN MCGINN – 10

This is prime McGinn. Everywhere, all the time. A nuisance and a a threat all rolled up into a feisty Scottish ball of energy. Booked early but didn’t let that impede his combativeness until the death. Emery has clearly steered him into the leadership role he sometimes looked like he didn’t want previously. As with Mings clearly revelling in the upturn of style and form since Emery’s arrival.

– Ivan McDouall

EMILIANO BUENDÍA – 7

He was his usual busy self. Tried continuously to make things happen however his final ball was off all afternoon. Hit the bar with a superb effort before half time.

After a couple of below par performances for his standards, he seemed ready to make amends ready for the run in but there is still another level for him to hit. Replaced by Duran for the final 30.

– Gary Plaza

Durán 68: More minutes than usual. I’m guessing this is part of the process following him being refused leave for the U20 world cup. Great break forward straight after coming on which showed his attacking intent. Helped see the game out. 7

LEON BAILEY – 7

In truth there was only fleeting moments from the Jamaican winger but that was an improvement on some of the low moments we have seen before. Tested Forster himself and a lovely assist for Ramsey’s goal. I still can’t work out whether he likes to try and beat players or not. Will always be an enigmatic squad member but today was a fair contribution.

– Ivan McDouall

Kamara 68: Oh it felt good to see him back, purring around like he’d never been away. There is no doubting his class as he moves away from players and plays both incise and unfussy passes. Imagine he might be used sparingly over the last two but a great option to close out games. 7

OLLIE WATKINS – 7.5

Hasn’t scored in five games now but continues to be a real handful as he occupies multiple defenders all match. Created a big chance for Leon Bailey, produced a deft flick in the build-up to the opener and was unlucky not to be awarded a penalty when challenged by Romero later in the half. Won the free kick for the crucial second. Goals will flow again soon for the industrious Englishman.

– Joey Millington

Cash 91: Replaced Watkins in stoppage time to see the game out. N/A

  1. Great remarks regarding Villa’s players performances yesterday, and all are spot on the way i saw it I feel ! Just a shame about that so called penalty that wasn’t ! You just have to ask yourself, how did Emi foul Kane when he was already on the floor a tad before Kane, and got contact with his arms mostly? Lets be honest, how many times we seen the Spurs & England player do this and get away with it during games? Cheating? I’ll leave it up to the Villa fans to decide…..Still you can’t take it away from Villa, they did a cracking job on the Londoners, and defended well and scored two wonderful goals in the process. Two games to go, and I’d like to think theres more to come from Emery and his team in both games? I do hope so anyway…UTV.
